“Iron Man 3″ updates – Iron Patriot arrives

It’s nice to get some post-”Marvel’s The Avengers” news from the Marvel Studios front.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, it was reported that Jon Favreau, who directed the first two installments of the “Iron Man” franchise but wasn’t returning behind the camera for part 3, would still reprise his on-camera role as Tony Stark’s bodyguard Happy Hogan. I loved Favreau’s take on Iron Man, but was probably most disappointed at the thought of him not being in the third movie so it’s nice to see that Happy won’t have to get recast a la James Rhodes with Terrence Howard to Don Cheadle.

The ante will definitely be upped for “Iron Man 3″  as this will be the debut of Stark’s main adversary – The Mandarin, played by Ben Kingsley. The Mandarin is Asian and Kingsley, of course, is not. Typically, comic movies have to diversify the cast as many of the iconic characters were introduced before diversity was considered a noteworthy endeavor so this is an interesting twist on that front.

And now today, Yahoo’s Spotted on Set caught a few pictures of another of Stark’s foes – Iron Patriot. While the comic-book Avengers were in the midst of a massive falling out after “Civil War,” Spider-Man’s main foe Norman Osborn – The Green Goblin – became the media darling after ending an alien invasion by killing the invasion’s leader. He furthered his new found goodwill by creating his own team of heroes and in a not-so-subtle dig at Tony Stark, takes one of Stark’s Iron Man suits, painted it red, white and blue for that perfect patriot look and dubbed himself “Iron Patriot” as seen in 2009′s “Dark Avengers.”  The Dark Avengers was pretty interesting to read and Osborn made for a perfect villain because you couldn’t wait for him to get his tail handed to him by the end.

Since Osborn is a Spider-Man villain and tied up with Sony Pictures, he couldn’t be used in an Iron Man movie, so Marvel Studios has Eric Savin in the role. Savin first appeared in Marvel Comics Presents #26 (August 1989). Savin was a cyborg named Coldblood-7  and among the regular super-strength, speed, stamina, invulnerability, he also can interface with any computer system… like say Iron Man’s armor? James Badge Dale (“The Departed”) is Savin in “Iron Man 3.”

Rebecca Hall (“The Town”) has as of yet an undisclosed role, but it’s no stretch to think she could be one of Stark’s old flames. One particularly interesting one is Madame Masque, a crime lord who blames Stark for her father’s death.

Guy Pearce is playing Aldrich Killian, a scientist introduced in “Extremis,” the 2006 modernized update to the Iron Man story since most younger readers have no clue about Vietnam, the original conflict that forced Stark to don his armor. Killian helps unleash Extremis on the world and it’s up to Stark to stop it from falling into the wrong hands.

Beyond the momentum from “Marvel’s The Avengers,” the Iron Man franchise is a license to print money for Marvel Studios as well and  “Iron Man 3″ is pretty much a lock to be one of the best and highest grossing films of 2013. Clearly it’s just a Marvel world and we’re all living in it.

Hot Toys isn’t the only player in the 12″ movie collectible figure market. Enterbay is the other big name in movie excellence. Hot Toys’ sculptors are just a bit better in capturing that lifelike look in their figures, but Enterbay is getting there with their Real Masterpiece line.

Today they released images of their latest film property – Men In Black 3 – specifically Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) and Agent J (Will Smith).

The likeness of Jones is a bit soft, especially with the sunglasses on where the figure looks more like Hugo Weaving’s Agent Smith from “The Matrix. With the glasses off, the figure looks much more like Jones, but this is one of those cases where the more iconic look with the shades is how most people would prefer to display them.

Agent J’s figure is much closer to Will Smith and Enterbay made sure that Agent J is scaled correctly and is actually taller than Agent K, much like the 6’2″ Smith is taller than the 6′ Jones. As a stickler for details like that, it’s much appreciated that Enterbay accounted for scale.

Here’s the official write-up:

Agent J
· Museum-like representation of Agent J with authentic likeness

· Individually hand-painted head sculpt with a serious facial expression; details wrinkles and expression with newly developed “multi layer” paint application

· Newly developed RM-6 body with 40 points of articulation; PVC soft plastic skin to cover the chest area, so that the articulations around the chest area will not be visible. The shape on the arms also looks better.

· Movie-accurate costume designed by the famous Korean figurine tailor ADDBLUE includes: a black suit (jacket, trousers and white shirt), a black belt with buckle; a tie, a pair of socks and a pair of black faux-leather

· Four pairs of interchangeable hands

· Movie-related accessories: sunglasses, time jump device, the neutralizer, and the alien orb

Agent K has all the same save the last bit, so instead he has:

Movie-related chrome mad accessories: a Shark Gun, a 2012 Standard Issue, a shotgun and a Noisy Cricket

And just for fun, Agent J comes with one of his former partners, Agent F, the pug from “Men In Black 2.” While most of us would just as soon forget “MIB2,” this is a cool little addition.

If you’re interested in snagging these, you can pre-order them from Big Bad Toy Store in time for the holidays.

Hot Toys is all about the awesome 12″ collectible figure market and there is no close competitor for my money. In addition to their amazing work on “Marvel’s The Avengers,”  (here’s their Thor, Captain America and Loki) they also do some equally astonishing production on other movie properties and with so many high-profile summer blockbusters, Hot Toys has their hands full with a number of big time projects.

Here’s a first look at their other big property from Marvel Comics’ – The Amazing Spider-Man. I’m not that into this movie costume as I was the Sam Rami design, but it’s red and blue so it has the basic costume elements down and after years of black leather costumes for superheroes, anything that comes close is fine with me.

Here’s the official write-up from Hot Toys:

The Amazing Spider-Man will be swinging into theatres in 3D next month! This will mark a new chapter of Spider-Man in his long-established legacy!

Celebrating the launch of this summer blockbuster, we are proud to present this Amazing Spider-Man collectible figurine with finely made and newly developed costume, as well as the Peter Parker’s head sculpt!

Fans may already know that we have solid experience in developing the detailed costume for Spider-Man and we apply a similar technique to this new costume which will have the most movie-accurate cutting that fans have been expecting for long! More amazing photos will be unveiled soon! Stay tuned!
