“Think Like A Man” crew attempts rare feat with romantic comedy sequel

“Think Like A Man” crew attempts rare feat with romantic comedy sequel or “Why no one’s tried making a sequel to ‘Boomerang,’ “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” or “The Proposal.”

With an impressive $91 million haul this year, Screen Gems announced a sequel is in the works for “Think Like a Man” that will once again be written by Keith Merryman and David Newman and produced by Steve Harvey.

Granted there’s no guarantee that Megan Good, Gabrielle Union or any of the cast from this year’s hit film will return for a sequel, but any movie with Good or Union is worth at least one viewing from me. I loved the first movie and the different dynamics of couples, but I’m not sure how essential a sequel is as the ending wraps up all the subplots nicely enough.

This got me thinking of how many romantic comedies I’ve enjoyed that had sequels. I suppose you could count “Father of the Bride,” “Grumpy Old Men” and “Legally Blonde,” but those are all fairly big stretches as the romance aspect was merely a subplot for the larger comedy.

Confession time: I like good romantic comedies and have a decent sized collection on DVD and Blu-Ray, but after the credits rolled I can’t say I felt any desire to see what happens next for Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey’s characters in “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” or where Paula Patton and Laz Alonzo’s characters go after they finished “Jumping the Broom.”

Audiences want the illusion that every couple they invest two hours in will enjoy their happily ever after. Returning to them in a sequel likely means something is going to mess up that picture-perfect ending before they ultimately get back together.

Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo can spawn sequel after sequel but there’s only so many ways a couple can have disagreements, take a break/separate before the dramatic reunion and declaration of love for one another.  Take all the critics who said “The Hangover Part II” was too similar to the original and multiply that by a hundred for a romantic comedy sequel so it’ll be very interesting to see how Harvey and company give us a compelling reason to think like a man again.

Hot Toys’ “The Amazing Spider-Man” collectible figure

Another Marvel Comics’ summer blockbuster, another round of awe-inspiring 12″ collectible figures from Hot Toys.

This time it’s figures based off “The Amazing Spider-Man,” the Spider-Man reboot starring Andrew Garfield (“The Social Network”) and Emma Stone (“Crazy Stupid Love”) featuring Spidey tangling with one of his old villains, The Lizard. The movie looks to be a bit much on the video game-y CGI, but a smart alec Spider-Man is a better Spider-Man than the other three movies, even if his costume isn’t as cool.

I’m not the biggest fan of this new costume as the lack of the red “belt” area doesn’t break up the blue enough for me and the red and blue finger gloves are too busy. Spider-Man has one of the few really iconic costumes that doesn’t need tinkering with to get right and this new outfit is way too involved and hardly looks like something a high school kid would put together. In the comics, Spidey made his own attire while still in high school.

That’s personal opinion though as Hot Toys looks to have captured the movie costume just fine with the exception of the eye patches, which look orange instead of the standard mirrored or straight white appearance.

Hot Toys didn’t reveal any pictures of the separate head sculpt for Andrew Garfield, which is not the norm for them. Note the blurred out picture in the full accessories shot. After successfully nailing down Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson for the “Marvel’s The Avengers” figures, I don’t think Garfield would prove that difficult. But since it looks like once again Spider-Man will have his mask off for half the movie, Hot Toys probably wanted to make sure the unmasked head sculpt was perfect.

The movie comes out next week so this will be the first of many Spider-Man related features between now and its July 3 release date.

You’re gonna love “Ted” if Seth MacFarlane’s particular brand of potty-humor still has you doubled over in laughing fits every Sunday. Even if you’re over the “Family Guy” format, there are a few moments that achieve comedy greatness if you’re willing to endure a lot of fifth-grade level material. More

[2012 Flash Forward - This one was added by reader request, but I still completely agree with everything in this review and if you haven't seen this movie yet. Tsk tsk. Fix that this weekend]

From the opening short right through the end credits, Pixar’s “Toy Story 3” is a as close to moviemaking perfection as you could possibly ask for and easily stands as not just the summer’s best film, but an easy favorite for the year’s best as well. More

Christopher Nolan gets his hands dirty prior to “The Dark Knight Rises”

This news just got released about my current favorite director:

Eric Charbonneau/Warner Bros. Pictures
From of Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ “THE DARK KNIGHT RISES,” MORGAN FREEMAN, GARY OLDMAN, CHRISTIAN BALE, CHRISTOPHER NOLAN, ANNE HATHAWAY, MICHAEL CAINE and JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT at the ceremony honoring director/writer/producer CHRISTOPHER NOLAN, whose hand and footprints were placed in the forecourt of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. “THE DARK KNIGHT RISES” is a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

In celebration of the upcoming release of “The Dark Knight Rises,” the film’s director/writer/producer, Christopher Nolan, will be accorded a rare industry honor and will have his hand and footprints cemented into the famed forecourt of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

The hand-and-footprint ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. July 7.

“Everyone at Warner Bros. joins me in congratulating Christopher Nolan, who has been such an integral part of our family for the past 12 years,” said Jeff Robinov, president, Warner Bros, Pictures Group. “We are extremely proud of the cinematic legacy he has given us through his films.  At only 41, Christopher takes his place alongside other industry giants featured at Grauman’s, and generations of fans will remember the extraordinary impression he left on their imaginations.”

Sure Kobe Bryant and Alvin & The Chipmunks have added their prints to the forecourt — don’t get me started –  but Nolan is undeniably deserving of this honor. The guy hasn’t made a bad movie yet and he continues to deliver some amazing sequence in his films that taps into the full scope of movie-making. I’m still amazed that “Inception” was passed over for the Best Picture Oscar and that Nolan wasn’t even nominated for Best Director in 2011.

And I’m almost ready to start the obnoxious countdown for “The Dark Knight Rises,” which opens July 20 that will no doubt include plenty of reflections on Nolan’s previous works and Batman’s film history. Stay tuned. Should be a fun July!

What are your thoughts and grades for all of the Pixar that YOU remember seeing, including Toy Story 3 and your thoughts on Disney/Pixar’s new film Brave?

-Brian Daubach

Brian had a bunch of great questions and one of which inspired this week’s Film Flashbacks of one of my favorite movies of the last decade – “Toy Story 3.”

Brian gave me a great suggestion. If there’s an older movie you’d like to see get the Flashback treatment [since I've got a ton of films from 2001 to 2011 to still upload to the site] send an email or write a comment and we’ll take a new look at an older film.
