R.I.P. Doink the Clown

mattbourne doinkSigh. As a wrestling fan for more than 20 years, this has become the norm, but it still always sucks.

Matt Osborne (Matt Bourne to wrestling fans) died today at 55.

I first was introduced to him in World Class Championship Wrestling and he was a classic heel managed by Percy Pringle (who himself died earlier this year). Here’s a match against Kevin Von Erich:

Matt Bourne as Big JoshHe had a decent run in WCW as Big Josh – a dumb character, but he made it work.

But most people know him as the original Doink the Clown in the WWF. He was great in the role and a lot of fun as the wicked, evil clown.

Osborne was a guy who never the star he should have been, but he was always entertaining.

If you get some free time, I highly recommend checking out his matches from 1993 as he tangled with some of the best from that era in surprisingly great matches including Bret “Hitman” Hart and Mr. Perfect before leaving the WWF to be replaced by a number of inferior clones. He had a mini-run in the formative years of ECW, which seemed like an ideal fit, but he didn’t stay there too long either
