Star Trek Into Darkness – This was the 2013 summer film that was good and I enjoyed it, but still was a bit disappointed. And that’s really just because J.J. Abrams’ initial take on Kirk, Spock and Uhura was such an unexpected treat and exceeded expectation. The sequel, while entertaining, isn’t as revelatory and spends too much time being reverent to the original series despite a tremendous adversary in Benedict Cumberbatch. It’s still definitely worth seeing, but hopefully the third film will take a greater leap forward with the new Star Trek status quo.
Peebles – Craig Robinson and Kerry Washington are arguably at the peak of their careers with Robinson earning raves from his performance in “This is the End” and Washington making “Scandal” ABC’s most buzzed about drama since the heyday of “Grey’s Anatomy.” And even they couldn’t get audiences excited about their comedy collaboration about a guy heading to his girlfriend’s family reunion to ask her stuffy father (David Allen Grier) for his permission to marry her. The trailer didn’t make it seem all the enticing and this is one of those films you see exactly how it will play out from the two-minute teaser. Skip it and spare yourself the waste of 95 minutes.
