In their 80s heyday, the Titans were every bit as popular as Marvel Comics’ X-Men with their roster of Batman’s sidekick Robin (Dick Grayson) striking out on his own, Flash’s junior running buddy Kid Flash (Wally West), Wonder Woman’s younger partner Wonder Girl (Donna Troy), Green Arrow’s sidekick Speedy (Roy Harper), former athlete turned half-man/half-machine Cyborg, alien princess Starfire, the animal shape shifting Changeling, the body snatcher Jericho and the mysterious Raven.
While it continues getting smoked by Marvel Comics on the movie front, Warner Bros TV/DC Comics are dominating the small screen with “Arrow” in its third season and new shows CW’s “Flash,” FOX’s “Gotham” and NBC’s “Constantine” debuting in a few more weeks and reportedly a “Supergirl” show is also in the works.
Of all these shows, “Titans” could be the most ambitious/expensive if the team’s most popular lineup (Robin, Wonder Girl, Cyborg, Starfire, Raven, Changeling and Kid Flash) is featured. The Titans have been most prominently featured on the kid show “Teen Titans Go!” with a lineup of Robin, Cyborg, Starfire, Beast Boy (Changeling’s other alias) and Raven. But for a better take on the teen heroes in DC, skip that and just watch “Young Justice.”
According to Deadline, Akiva Goldsman (Oscar winning screenwriter “A Beautiful Mind“) will be writing “Titans” with Marc Haimes and focus on Dick Grayson as he branches off from Batman to become Nightwing and lead the new heroes. Raven and Starfire were named, but Wonder Girl is at least a safe bet. With Kid Flash likely to appear on “Flash” and Cyborg slated to appear on “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” their roles are less certain. Ditto for Speedy/Roy Harper who is already played by Colton Haynes on “Arrow.” But it’d be pretty cool for some cross-overs or for Haynes to become a semi-regular on the show, wouldn’t it?
So what do you think? As excited as I am about the news?–
