One of the series’ best seasons completed and as everyone predicted, the winner wasn’t a big shock. (But for those who don’t want to be spoiled don’t go further)
Derrick capped off one of the great strategies in BB history — one that never saw him get nominated for eviction yet having every evicted houseguest nodding their head in appreciation for his role in getting them out the house — to win.
Few thoughts from the finale and season in general:
-The biggest surprise for me was that it wasn’t a unanimous vote as Donny and Jocasta voted for Cody, which reinforced the thought that they couldn’t comprehend not being 100% honest the entire game and why they were in the jury and not the final two.
-I know the producers like to keep tinkering each year to come up with some new gimmick (the saboteur, the clicks, diamond power of veto) but I’d be perfectly happy if BB17 featured The Team America and Battle of the Block again. For the most part, the TA missions were fun, non-strategic assignments that helped liven the house up.
-My favorite houseguest seasons have been Season 10 (Dan, Memphis, Keisha, Ollie, April, etc.) and Season 12 (The Brigade, Brittany, Brenchel, Ragan, etc.) but I found this collection of HGs the most fun and likable. From Beastmode Cowboy Caleb’s immensely entertaining delusions of being the house’s main power, Frankie’s (sister) name-dropping lust for the spotlight, Donny’s aw-shucks good-natured demeanor, Zach’s crazy unpredictable antics, Christine’s constant scheming, the cute Nicole/Hayden showmance and Victoria’s …. well I’m sure she did something of value, this was a great cast and a good mix of personalities.
-I really appreciated Derrick completing the Donnie Brasco job he’d done in the house by ditching the hippie beard and glasses for the finale and transforming back to his doting father and loving husband
-I really wish Julie could have spent a little time talking to the early evicted HGs. I wanted to know if Brittany has become a soccer coach, see Devin tear up when asked about his daughter and how far away Caleb must stand away from Amber after she filed that restraining order.
-Was it me or did it seem like Derrick didn’t feel especially concerned with winning that final HOH contest against Cody? I almost feel like he threw it just to guarantee that Victoria would still vote for him since he was the one who didn’t evict her.
-It’s hard to call someone who made $50,000 for three months of chilling, poor, but it’s hard not to feel a little bad for Cody on multiple occasions last night. The first when he first got wind of the jury thinking he was Derrick’s patsy like the rest of the house. The second was when he tried to explain his big move of the season. The third was when Derrick decided not to go into true supervillain mode and gleefully outline everything he’d done to deserve winning — Cody had already done a good enough job for him. Folks expecting a mic-drop eviction speech would be disappointed because Derrick didn’t need to. Besides, it’d be hard to top this one from The Great One:
-As I’ve said before, Derrick has to be considered in the Top 3 BB players of all time writing a how to win strategy in the process. I’d love to see him match wits against Dan and Dr. Will in some form or fashion, but that will just have to be the Big Brother Dream Match we likely won’t ever see. Till next summer…
