Black Panther is biggest reveal of Marvel Cinematic reveal

Black Panther conceptI wasn’t expecting all of the amazing news we got from Marvel at today’s big reveal of the Phase 3 films, but longtime readers know I have been pulling for Black Panther to show up in a Marvel Studios film since “Marvel’s The Avengers.” And not only is that now a reality, but Panther will be headlining his own film!

chadwick bosemanFor a special bonus, Chadwick Boseman, arguably one of the hottest up and coming actors around has been confirmed to take the lead role and I CANNOT WAIT!

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirmed that we will see Black Panther in “Captain America: Civil War” in costume so Black Panther will officially be on the big screen in 2016!

But even more importantly was Marvel brought out the franchise’s two big guns Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. to build up the hype for “Civil War,” but also made a point to introduce Boseman to the masses and have him to a bit where he teases joining one side of the Iron Man vs. Captain America conflict. Downey, Boseman and EvansBoseman says “Black Panther is kind of his own guy” indicating that Panther is not going to play a sidekick role like Hawkeye or Falcon and that he will have a significant role in the movie’s take on the story just like he did in the comic book. (Black Panther: Civil War) It’s also telling that despite Doctor Strange coming out in November 2016 — a full year before Black Panther’s solo film, Boseman has already been cast so you know he is being groomed to be a key cog in the next round of Marvel films.

Black Panther Civil WarThis in itself is major news as Panther will mark the first serious blockbuster comic book film starring an African-American since Wesley Snipes’ Blade trilogy ended in 2004 and Marvel will beat DC’s “Cyborg” standalone, which also stars a black superhero and is slated for 2020. Diversity has been the one sticking point from critics about the Marvel lineup of movies and while the films have been inclusive with characters like Falcon, Iron Patriot/War Machine and even Nick Fury, this will be the first film under the Marvel Studios banner (meaning you know it will be done right) to headline a black character. And with a hot actor and an entire new sector of the Marvel universe to cover, this could be the next big Marvel revelation a la “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

Evans, Boseman and DowneyI am absolutely thrilled and can’t wait to read the comments from Fred and Keith. Now if only we could manage to squeeze out a Boseman/Panther appearance in “The Avengers: Age of Ultron.”

    Keith- TURN UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thats my first reaction. Feel happy for a character that is not only complex, royal, smart, and a badass. I loved the character ever since I read the FF book where he was willing to go out to protect his people is being shown. Now I expect hate groups (fox news) to a hold of this but my spirit is happy. And Marvel golden touch keeps up he may get several movies and transition to be VERY important to the avengers as RDJ steps down in a few years. Good for Chad, black actors, marvel for listening and not being halplessly out of touch like their boring and inconsisitent comp of dumb and corny (dc)

  • Fred

FINALLY YES. Jeff how many yes have we’ve been talking about this on your site, between you and us viewers. It’s finally come to light and damn am I super stoked. The top stories in today’s announcements for me, 1)Black Panther, 2)Infinity Wars parts 1 & 2, 3)Captain Marvel, 4)The Inhumans. Damn Marvel has absolutely blown my mind today and beyond infinity my friend haha.

  • keith

so it don on me… chad will have played jackie robinson, james brown, and Tchalla. Gotdamn… who starts off like that? The funny thing Is I was just talking about chadwick after watching dear white people and the state of up and coming black actor. Chad, Mike b Jordan(drop out of that career flop fox is going please man) and justin siemen busting on the scene, maybe black hollywood has hope aside from the tired slapstick comedy, melodramas, or slave and jim crow pics that plague roles or people. Maybe people will see a little of themselves in character like these brought to life

  • Man, I’m stoked! What an outstanding announcement! And I know Chadwick is gonna be perfect in the role!

  • Civil War is my #3 for the first appearance of Panther, but Capt. Marvel may be #4.

I know man, it feels like something we’ve discussed for almost as long as I’ve been doing the site! 😉

  • I think Boseman is going to get an Oscar at some point in his career. Just seems to be when.

I’m excited about the future for black cinema and where it will go in the next few years.

  • Fred

Jeff as far as the movies goes in order of excitement i’ll say 1)Black Panther, 2)Infinity War, 3)Civil War, 4)Doctor Strange, 5)Captain Marvel, 6)Thor Ragnarok, 7)The Inhumans, 8)GOTG2. But I’m really looking foward to everything the MCU has to offer my friend.

  • Fred

Yeah man Boseman has had a strong past few years to say the least and he obviously caught Marvel’s attention for good reason. It’s going to mean so much seeing a black character lead his own superhero franchise and be a big part of the MCU as a whole. I think there’s no doubt that Snipes as Blade proved to Marvel and other studios that a black superhero can truly carry his weight on his own franchise. I think Black Panther is going to be a monster at the box office and take it to another level, Marvel is smart in introducing T’Challa in Civil War first. By the time the Black Panther film rolls around movie audiences are going to be well aware of who he is and are going to eat that film up, just watch. I’m looking for Black Panther to assemble a good director and a fine cast as well, it’s going to be fantastic seeing a big budgeted black ensemble superhero film on the big screen. I wouldn’t be surprised if a couple of Avengers make appearances in it either. As far as Michael B Jordan goes in that FF film, damn it’s not looking too good at the moment haha.

  • Fred

Yeah it’s looking like Boseman is carving out quite a nice career for himself and people are starting to take notice. I wouldn’t be surprised if he get’s an Oscar either at some point in his career, he actually has an interesting role in a film that he’s currently shooting now, I forgot what the film is called.

  • I’m ecstatic the role went to Boseman. This will solidify him as an A-lister.

I’m wondering if he needs Avengers showing up though. Besides Thor, the others didnt pop up until sequels.

  • Message from the King? Gods of Egypt?

  • Fred

Jeff I don’t think an ‘Avenger’ will need to necessarily pop up in Black Panther, but the story might call for an appearance by an Avenger or two. And seeing that Black Panther is the last film leading up to ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ part 1, I think we will most likely get an appearance from a few Avengers in the film.

  • My phone was acting crazy and apparently didn’t take all of my responses. They probably don’t need to have a bunch in there. Maybe a random call to arms for Infinity War, but that may be all that’s needed at that point.
