WB/DC and Disney/Marvel Studios are waging a fun to behold war of movie announcements and casting rumors while on the other corner of the comic book movie universe, Fox and Sony are trying to top each other in terms of which company can jump the shark quicker with the comic book properties they’re holding hostage.
After Fox laid down an impressive first shot yesterday with the revelation that Dr. Doom, the baddest man in the Marvel universe, will be a social programmer whose online handle is “DOOM,” you’d think it’d be pretty hard to top that, right? Not so fast.
Sony is reportedly working on an Aunt May — yes, that Aunt May — spinoff. Let that sink in for a minute. Have no fear though, this will be a “Gotham” style look with a young, vibrant May perfecting the art of wheatcakes, doting and likely dating a young Ben. There’s no truth to the rumor Seth Rogen is rumored to play Uncle Ben…yet.
Ok, I’m joking (sadly just somewhat). May will be featured in a spy tale so think Aunt May via Jason Bourne. How incredibly stupid does this sound? Latino Review reports: “The target mood is some sort of espionage story in the vein of AMC’s Mad Men, which sounds like a way of saying ‘classier Agent Carter’ without name-dropping Marvel’s upcoming series.”
Again, Sony and Fox, you’ve had your fun and made some good money, but let’s get the Spider-Man and Fantastic Four franchises back to Marvel Studios where they belong, OK pumpkin?
