The clock is ticking for Warner Bros. production of “Suicide Squad” and they’re a man short for the job.
“Suicide Squad” is set to debut Aug. 5, 2016, but Director David Ayer is still looking for a replacement to fill the role of Rick Flag. Tom Hardy initially was cast, but backed out due to scheduling conflicts. Warner Bros. then recruited Jake Gyllenhaal for the part, but he decided against it.
In the comics, Flag is the team leader and sole non-criminal trying to keep the group in line to carry out their missions. The film is already juggling the mega-star Will Smith as Deadshot, Jared Leto in his first role since winning a Best Supporting Actor Oscar and now we’ve got rumors that Batman may be dropping in for a cameo. That doesn’t seem to leave room for a very meaty role for whoever plays Flag, which is likely why Gyllenhaal didn’t opt to reunite with his “End of Watch” director. According to some reports, WB is now looking at Joel Edgerton and Jon Bernthal. Edgerton actually starred opposite Hardy in “Warrior” so that would be nice symmetry and he’s also got some experience as a soldier from his role in “Zero Dark Thirty (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + UltraViolet Digital Copy).” Bernthal, of course helped make the first couple of seasons of “The Walking Dead: Season 1 [Blu-ray]” so much fun in his role as Shane.
Of the two, Edgerton seems a better fit for Flag. Bernthal would have been a lot of fun as Captain Boomerang as he showed he could handle a more comedic character in “The Wolf of Wall Street (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD)”
I’m surprised DC/WB hasn’t considered Sam Worthington, who has the same stocky build as Hardy. Worthington has that take-no-crap from anybody look and would be able to more than hold his own surrounded by a bunch of psychotic criminals and assassins.
And while I’m playing casting agent here’s a few other options:
Liam Hemsworth – He’s already had experience handling a gun in “The Expendables 2 (Blu-ray + Digital Copy + UltraViolet)” and gives him a comic book character so brother Chris has some competition. And with “The Hunger Games” ending Hemsworth may welcome signing up for a new franchise.
Alex O’Loughlin – The “Hawaii Five-0: Season 1 [Blu-ray]” star looks every bit the part. All he’d need to do is swap his blue T-Shirt for a yellow one with a holster and he’d be all set.
Chris Pine – As Captain Kirk in the “Star Trek” relaunch, Pine is already used to giving orders among an ensemble and Pine has mastered the art of making the most of his screen time thanks to larger ensembles like “Into the Woods” and “Smokin’ Aces (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy).”
