From the “here’s hoping these rumors are true” department, the two front-runners for the Spider-Man that will be appearing in Marvel Studios’ universe and Avengers films are two very strong candidates.
Since Marvel Studios wants to send Peter Parker back to school — high school specifically, (but please no origin retelling) — they’re looking for a younger Peter Parker than 31-year-old Andrew Garfield. While I’m happy about everything else with this Marvel Studios/Sony deal, I would’ve loved to have seen Garfield hanging with The Avengers.
The two under heavy consideration right now according to multiple sources are Dylan O’Brien and Logan Lerman.
O’Brien nailed the geeky nerd role down in “The Internship (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD with UltraViolet),” practiced his sarcastic swagger in “Teen Wolf: Season 3 Part 2” and crafted his lead action hero game in “The Maze Runner [Blu-ray].” He’ll turn 24 in August.
Lerman also has experience playing the lede in a YA action series as the star of the Percy Jackson series, but he’s benefited from working with some of Hollywood’s A-Listers like Christian Bale and Russell Crowe in “3:10 to Yuma [Blu-ray],” Christoph Waltz in “The Three Musketeers (Special Edition) [Blu-ray]” and most recently, Brad Pitt in “Fury [Blu-ray + Digital HD].” Lerman just turned 23 in January.
Based on the acting pedigree, Lerman looks to have a slight advantage, but O’Brien has more of a Peter Parker look to me. What do you think? Who would you like to see in the role?
