6 reveals and questions from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer

I’m not gonna lie. I’m probably going to be watching the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer a few dozen times until the next one arrives.

I wasn’t totally convinced we needed movies of every aspect of the Star Wars saga — especially since the timeframe I’m most curious about circa post Return of the Jedi Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (Limited Edition Steel Book) [Blu-ray]
to Force Awakens — won’t be addressed, but this one hooked me almost from the start.

ROGUE ONE A STAR WARS STORY - vs AT ATs

ROGUE ONE A STAR WARS STORY - Jyn ErsoJust as impressive as the sight of Stormtroopers in their prime reigning terror on an unsuspecting populace was the welcome diverse cast.

It’s more than Felicity Jones marking another Star Wars film with a female lead though. From Donnie Yen to Forest Whitaker, Riz Ahmed and Diego Luna, this installment furthers Walt Disney and Lucasfilm’s efforts to make the Star Wars saga more reflective of today’s society.

Here’s five more quick thoughts from the trailer:

ROGUE ONE A STAR WARS STORY - Ben MendelshonBen Mendelsohn‘s Imperial officer looks grand and imposing. How does he fit in the ranks with Moff Tarkin, Darth Vader and The Emperor?

ROGUE ONE A STAR WARS STORY - mystery villainWho was that shadowy figure going to the chamber with the Royal Guard?

ROGUE ONE A STAR WARS STORY - the Death StarMon Mothma makes an appearance as the Rebel leader giving Jyn Erso the mission to find the Death Star plans. Can we hope to see a cameo from a young Princess Leia?

ROGUE ONE A STAR WARS STORY - Forest WhitakerIs Forest Whitaker’s character friend, foe or Obi-Wan Kenobi/Yoda type mentor?

Is Disney/Lucasfilm planning to create bread crumbs for the sequel trilogy i.e. introducing characters in these spin-offs who missed the original trilogy who could resurface in the continuing adventures of Rey, Finn and Poe?

The Gareth Edwards film is set for release Dec. 28.
