Natalie Portman out, Tessa Thompson in for ‘Thor: Ragnarok’

Natalie Portman is an amazing actress. She was amazing in Closer and well deserving of the Best Actress Oscar for Black Swan. And typically anytime you’d lose an Oscar winner as part of your cast it couldn’t help but be a significant blow to your franchise, but the news that Thor: Ragnarok won’t include Portman is probably addition by subtraction.

As bright as Portman’s star has shone, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now beyond needing to lure high-profile Oscar winners/nominees to lend their films credibility.

Portman reportedly wasn’t happy that Marvel execs replaced Patty Jenkins as director of Thor: The Dark World. The rift was allegedly so tense that Portman didn’t want to return until Marvel forced her to honor her contract. If Portman didn’t want to be a part of the biggest non-Star Wars franchise going that’s certainly her prerogative. This all but assures the film won’t try and force any goofy humor with Kat Dennings’ Darcy with Jane gone so that’s another plus.

I’m more excited about the reveal that Creed star Tessa Thompson will likely be the female lead in her place. Thompson is clearly a star on the rise and I’m thrilled she’s getting a high profile gig that will take her career to the next level.

I’m curious if Marvel envisions Thompson playing a new character or an established one like Valkyre or the Enchantress. Both would be major departures from the comic version, but we’ve seen the MCU isn’t afraid to do race swaps to make the universe more diverse.

What do you think of this news? Disappointed Portman’s gone or think it won’t really matter?

  • I normally stay away from posts with news about upcoming movies, but the headline threw me for a loop…in a good way. I thought the weakest part of both Thor movies was his relationship with Jane. Hemsworth and Portman just have no chemistry and, in the case of the second film, is shoehorned in. And I really like Tessa Thompson. She was great in both Dear White People and Creed. Could she be the love interest? I’m torn if I would prefer that or to see her as a heroine.

Yes, I’m really stoked about his move. Jane never worked as well as she should have and I don’t think the film will suffer at all from her absence.

Having her as Elektra sounds like a cool idea.

    Enchantress, right?

I think TDW is the last Thor movie I will see. I am not happy that the final Thor movie will not finish with Jane especially due to the way the last one ended, and I was so looking forward to Thor 3 but there should be no other love interest for Thor but Jane. I’m sure no one cares about my opinion but there it is, so I will just have to be content with upcoming Captain America and Avengers movies. I hope that the next time we see Iron Man we don’t find out that he dumped Pepper.

Hey Rita. In the comics, Thor was also in a long-term relationship with The Enchantress and kinda had a thing with Sif so it’s not like Jane is his one and only.
Are you a fan of Pepper? I liked her in the first two Iron Man films and Avengers, but have no desire to see her again.
