Former WWE/WCW champ Goldberg revealed for October release
I’m always glad to see the WWE mending fences with former talent for the benefit of the fans. Or also, what’s best for business. I get the two confused sometimes. Just like we saw a few years back with The Ultimate Warrior being a playable character in WWE 2K14, Goldberg was announced as the first pre-order bonus character.
If the reveal is any indication, players will likely be playing through his career. That could prove pretty interesting since Da Man was a major player during the Monday Night Wars. Hopefully, WWE will have pardoned Hulk Hogan for his issues by that point. Otherwise Goldberg’s biggest career defining moment when he defeated Hollywood Hogan to win the WCW World Title will have to be glossed over. And that’d be a pretty silly omission if his career is one of the selling points of this edition.
During his WCW run, Goldberg battled a who’s who of wrestling legends. Goldberg’s victims included Sting, Lex Luger, Ric Flair, The Giant, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and Diamond Dallas Page. That alone would be worthy of a game feature, but Goldberg also traveled to the WWE. There he battled major talent like The Rock, Triple H, Batista, Chris Jericho, Lance Storm, Mark Henry and Kane.
His WWE career ended in lackluster fashion as he battled Brock Lesnar in what should have been a dream match at Wrestlemania 20. Instead, the fans knew both guys were done with the WWE after that match and relentlessly booed them out of the building.
Here’s the 2K writeup:
Legendary WCW and WWE star Bill Goldberg arrives in WWE 2K17 to Spear and Jackhammer the competition! His unprecedented 173-0 win streak in WCW from 1997 to 1998 made an enormous impact with fans and spawned the catchphrase, “Who’s Next?” Goldberg collected top titles in both companies, including the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, WWE World Heavyweight Championship, WCW United States Heavyweight Championship and WCW World Tag Team Championship alongside WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart. His final appearance in a WWE ring was against Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania XX more than 12 years ago.
The pre-order bonus includes:
- Playable WCW Goldberg with black tights
- Playable WWE Goldberg with black and white shorts
- Two Playable Arenas: WCW Monday Nitro and Halloween Havoc
Just as intriguing, like Warrior, this olive branch could go a long way to actually seeing Goldberg back in a WWE ring. Stranger things have already happened in the last few years. Look at Bruno Sammartino returning, Ultimate Warrior’s reconciliation and Macho Man Randy Savage finally being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Da Man probably still has one more big run left in him. He indicated as much back on Jim Ross’ podcast.
So what do you think? Excited to be able to play as Goldberg or more amped about the possibility of him stepping back into a WWE ring?
