Magnificent Seven sees the outlaws assembled
This year hasn’t had me too excited about a lot once the initial comic book movie surge ended. Sure, there’s a few (Suicide Squad, Doctor Strange, Rogue One) that are obvious, but the rest of 2016 offerings look slim. One film I’d forgotten was on the horizon is The Magnificent Seven.
This remake starring Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke and Vincent D’Onofrio seems like it should be a lot of fun. Check out the new trailer released today by MGM and Columbia Pictures.
Yep, that definitely shoots right near the top of my most anticipated list for the second half of the year.
Here’s the synopsis:
With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), the desperate townspeople, led by Emma Cullen (Haley Bennett), employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns – Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington), Josh Farraday (Chris Pratt), Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), Billy Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee), Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier). As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.
There was a period in the 90s when Westerns were all the rage again with films like Unforgiven and Tombstone. Maybe The Magnificent Seven rekindles some of that fun and audience interest again? With this cast that might not be too far a stretch. September
Antoine Fuqua (The Equalizer) is my favorite underappreciated directors today so I’m pretty much interested in whatever he’s working on. And it’s been a very long time since I’ve been disappointed in a Denzel movie. Pratt has been on a phenomenal hot streak and this should only boost his stock beyond Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World.
The Magnificent Seven rides off into the sunset and arrives in theaters on Sept. 23.
