SDCC2016: WWE Day 3 – Typhoon, Hasbro style figs

Hasbro style WWE figures revealed on Day 3

Mattel might be winding down with its reveals for San Diego Comic Con 2016, but there were still some exciting reveals with Day 3.

Probably the biggest news for longtime fans is a return of a Hasbro style line. Hasbro had a much beloved run featuring the WWF’s biggest stars from the late 80s to early 90s. Customizers have been supplementing the ranks for stars who missed the cut ever since. Mattel isn’t just sticking to modern stars. The ‘Then, Now, Forever’ theme continues with this exclusive Wal-Mart set. The first reveals were Brock Lesnar, John Cena, Roman Reigns, Kevin Owens, The Undertaker and The Ultimate Warrior. Best of all? They’ve got the old school action features too.

As Mattel looks for new ways to expand its reach with Flashback figures, a new subset line is coming in 2017. The first figure in the set was teased with the debut of Wild Samoan Sika. From the sound of things, he’ll be packed with his partner Afa in a tag team line. I’m already working on my list of teams I’m hoping to see for it.

WWE Day 3 - Typhoon, Bam Bam, Tyler Breeze, The Rock

One team we can knock out is The Natural Disasters. Typhoon, the third and final gimmick of Fred Ottman, was debuted today. Mattel has been good about packing tag wrestlers in the same waves so look for an ND version of Earthquake in the next TNF line. I’m thrilled a tag team line could be in the works. That is the one realm in the Flashback line that’s been somewhat neglected.

WWE Day 3 - Ric Flair Wrestlemania 24 DM

On the Defining Moment front, Mattel continues to play it safe going with Ric Flair from Wrestlemania 24. The DM line is focused on stars like Flair, Sting, Ultimate Warrior and John Cena, but the choices remain puzzling. There’s still no robed Macho Man Randy Savage circa Wrestlemania 3, Shawn Michaels from Wrestlemania 12 or an Undertaker from his Wrestlemania 14 appearance. I don’t mind Mattel sticking to the big name, but attire decisions seem a bit lacking.

What do you think of this latest set of reveals?
