Cat Grant won’t be harassing Team Supergirl as often
Cat Grant will be spending more time hobnobbing with celebrities and less time pestering Kiera and company.
Calista Flockhart’s prickly name-dropping boss won’t be making forced appearances every episode for Supergirl’s second season.
Instead, Cat will be more of a recurring character. The Hollywood Reporter said Flockhart’s reduced role is due to logistics. Season 2 of Supergirl is being shot in Vancouver instead of Los Angeles to keep costs down now the show is on The CW instead of CBS.
‘Supergirl wouldn’t be Supergirl without the amazing Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant,’ executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said to THR. ‘We are so excited Calista has agreed to continue on the show when she can. We and the audience love to see her on screen.’
I know for a lot of folks Cat was one of their favorite characters. For me she never quite clicked. Cat always came off like a dated imitation of Meryl Streep’s The Devil Wears Prada character. Flockhart was fine in the role, but too much of Supergirl revolved around Cat.
The show dynamic was already weird since Kara had two separate Team Supergirl squads. There was the Catco crew of James, Winn and to a lesser degree Cat and the DEO team led by Alex and Hank. The writers attempted to give both groups equal time every episode to the show’s detriment. There’s no reason Winn and James can’t get phased into the DEO and now those moments with Cat will have real meaning.
Cat will be on hand for the Oct. 10 premiere, which also features Tyler Hoechlin making his debut as Superman.
I’m curious if the show will try to replace Cat in a sense with a new managing editor type character to be a nuisance to the Catco trio. Have to assume the show will be recreating Catco’s office and it will remain a key location even if Cat isn’t always present.
What do you think of the news? Bummed that Cat won’t be around as much or excited to see less of her scene-stealing antics?
