The odds of another installment of #OscarsSoWhite next year seem increasingly slimmer. One film that seems a strong front runner to be in the mix for a number of categories is Fences. The first Fences trailer was released today providing a first look at what appears to be a very strong contender.
Fences is the latest directorial effort from Denzel Washington (The Magnificent Seven). The film features a screenplay by the late August Wilson, adapting his Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play.
Washington also stars in the film. Joining him is a talented cast including Viola Davis (Suicide Squad), Mykelti Williamson, Jovan Adepo, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Saniyya Sydney.
Fences has a lot working in its favor for award consideration. Washington is well respected in Oscar circles. He won a Best Supporting Actor for Glory in 1990 and a long overdue Best Actor for Training Day in 2002.
Most recently, he earned another nomination in 2013 for Flight. Nate Parker’s The Birth of a Nation initially seemed to be the black film poised to receive a lot of Oscar love and attention. That buzz has largely derailed thanks to new attention on his rape charges from 17 years ago. Washington is the safer choice and Fences‘ lack of slave revolutions also works in its favor.
Be assured this is just the first Fences trailer. This is the first step in gaining traction and awareness for a serious award marketing campaign.
Fences arrives in theaters on Dec. 25.
