I’m equally amused and astonished Sony Pictures is making a movie based on Emojis. EMOJIMOVIE: Express Yourself looks to be one of those outlandish comedies that connection with audiences. It sounds crazy, but the crazier thing is it just might work.
The premise doesn’t sound nearly as ridiculous as it could. The film explores the secret world inside of smartphones. Deep in the message app lies Textopolis, a city comprised of emojis looking to be selected by the phone’s user. Fitting for a city of emojis, its inhabitants only have one facial expression.
Gene (T.J. Miller, Deadpool) is the exception as he was born without a filter and has multiple expressions. In other words, he’s a divergent in this land of emojis.
Here’s the synopsis:
Determined to become ‘normal’ like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 (James Corden) and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak (Ilana Glazer). Together, they embark on an epic ‘app-venture’ through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it’s deleted forever.
This honestly sounds pretty good for a movie about emojis. Heck, we got a movie about Angry Birds, why not emojis?
EMOJIMOVIE: EXPRESS YOURSELF will be coming to theaters on August 11, 2017. That timing isn’t bad either as it will be released right before children start returning to school. As the last great family film option next year, this could be a real surprise hit.
