Hot Toys teases Doctor Strange’s Ancient One figure

Hyped up for Doctor Strange yet? Hot Toys is definitely providing some reasons for excitement. Marvel Studios kicked off its global publicity tour Friday in Hong Kong. Hot Toys was there as well revealing a life-sized version of Doctor Strange. More intriguing though was the debut of the Ancient One 12-inch figure.

The Ancient One is Strange’s mentor and teacher of the magical arts. Think his version of Yoda. The film has already taken some hits for the ‘controversial’ casting of Tilda Swinton (We Need to Talk About Kevin) in the role.

Marvel is going a bit too PC-heavy in avoiding casting Asian actors for Asian characters in the comics to avoid playing up stereotypes. There’s ways to have Asian characters in the movies without being offensive. Nevertheless, Swinton is a solid choice for the role.

Star Benedict Cumberbatch, Swinton, director Scott Derrickson and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige were on hand in Hong Kong to help generate some buzz for the film. Cumberbatch seemed pretty impressed with the life-sized statue.

Hot Toys didn’t reveal much with the figure, likely waiting closer for the film’s Nov. 4 release, but the initial reveal looks promising. I’m curious how deep into the line Hot Toys will get. We’re still waiting on a release of the teased Yellowjacket figure from Ant-Man.

Doctor Strange doesn’t have to be a particularly deep line, but it would be all sorts of wrong if we don’t get a Baron Mordo or Wong figure.

I’ve got some big news concerning Doctor Strange so stay tuned. As the countdown really gets underway, I’m getting more and more excited for this one.
