Let me think about this for a sec. Nope, no chance that anybody would have made for a better choice to play Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo spinoff than Donald Glover.
Lando is one of my all-time favorite film characters. There wasn’t a surplus of black characters in sci-fi movies, especially ones that survived. It definitely helped that Lando was played by the ultra suave Billy Dee Williams. Glover has a lot of that laid-back chillness that should make for an excellent take on a younger Lando.

In all honesty, I hadn’t been all that excited about the Han Solo film, starring Alden Ehrenreich (Beautiful Creatures). I was worried constantly tapping characters for spin-offs would diminish the larger Star Wars story.
But if the still untitled spin-off is a buddy film with Han, Chewbacca and Lando, I’m down. Throw in that trio tangling with the Empire Strikes Back bounty hunters as well as Greedo and we might just turn this bad boy into something I’ll be counting down on my calendar. Any chance the film will end with Han and Lando playing a card game with the Millennium Falcon on the line?
Glover is already joining Disney’s other big franchise as he’ll be starring in Spider-Man: Homecoming in a yet to be announced role. Rumor has it he’ll be a relative to Abraham Attah, who may be Miles Morales.
Of all the potential standalone films I’m still really hoping we get a Obi-Wan Kenobi movie starring Ewan McGregor. He was terrific in the prequels and it’s be fascinating to see what the exiled Jedi did as he watched over Luke Skywalker. McGregor has discussed the possibility of it and has at least expressed some passing interest.
So what do you think of the news? Excited about Glover officially signing on? What are you hoping to see out of this one?
