Furious 7 put a neat and tidy bow on the Fast and Furious franchise with a bittersweet farewell for Paul Walker. It also would have made for a nice end point for the series if it wasn’t one of the more profitable non-Star Wars, non-Marvel Studios properties in Hollywood. But if the first trailer for The Fate of the Furious was any indication, there’s still plenty of exciting thrills and insane stunts left.
I was already cynical about the off-camera ‘tension’ between Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel, but the trailer definitely helped suggest the beef is Johnson going full The Rock mode and cutting a ticket-selling promo.
Either way, Dom’s apparent heel turn is an exciting way to keep the series from getting too stagnant. The series has always been about family and Dom’s betrayal flips that unit faster than some of their tricked out cars. The trailer did a great job of keeping Charlize Theron’s Cipher a mystery and it should be fun seeing how she convinced Dom to walk on the wild side. And clearly Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw is going to prove a major wild card once again for Hobbs’ crew.
The Fate of the Furious comes to theaters April 14, 2017. With new entries from the Furious series, Star Wars, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Justice League, it’s starting to look a lot like 2017 is going to be another killer year at the box office.
