Fresh off his memorable performance in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Forest Whitaker is returning as Saw Gerrera.
Whitaker, a Best Actor Oscar winner, will be voicing Saw on Star Wars Rebels. Rebels has been great about fleshing out some of the Empire/Rebel Alliance back story. Gerrera’s return opens up some really exciting possibilities with future Star Wars film tie-ins.
Characters that might not get a lot of screen time in the movies can get further developed on Rebels. And there’s also the possibility of Rebels characters making the jump to the big screen. It’s a pretty exciting time to be a Star Wars fan at this point.
Saw Gerrerra made his Star Wars debut in Star Wars: The Clone Wars where he was a guerilla fighter who teamed with Jedi Knights Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka Tano.
I’m looking forward to seeing how Rebels further reveals Saw’s descent to paranoia
‘It’s an incredible honor to have Forest Whitaker play Saw in ‘Rebels,’ says series executive producer Dave Filoni in a statement. ‘Forest did a great job at capturing Saw in a way that is a bit mad, a bit crazed, a bit afraid, but also a bit sympathetic. He sees something coming, but no one will take action before it’s too late.’
Whitaker’s first appearance will be in Star Wars Rebels: Ghosts of Genosis, Parts One and Two. Those episodes air 8:30 p.m. EST on Jan. 7 on Disney XD.
