Ranking the Marvel Studios movies from Iron Man to Avengers: Infinity War

Number 14: Doctor Strange

Benedict Cumberbatch was a relatively late arrival to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he immediately fit in perfectly. Doctor Strange provided some crazy visuals and opened up a new arena for Marvel Studios to explore. With a top talent cast from Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Tilda Swinton and Benedict Wong, the acting was a high point here instead of just the mesmerizing effects.

Two things really hold this back from ranking higher. The Strange jerk to hero arc is too familiar to Tony Stark. That’s appropriate to the source material, but there was only so much that could be done differently.

In keeping with the norm for the MCU, Strange has an underwhelming villain in Kaecilius, whose end game I still can’t remember after multiple viewings.

Finally, that pesky bit of whitewashing with Tilda Swinton playing The Ancient One wasn’t cool. Thankfully, Cumberbatch fit in so smoothly his cameo in Ragnarok was a very encouraging sign that he’s going to be a great addition to the Infinity War cast.
