DC Comics reviews for the week of 5/17/17

Superman #23

Superman #23 cover

The man behind all of Superman and family’s troubles is revealed this issue. While that’s big time bad news for Superman, it made for another amazing issue with a payoff that was totally worth the buildup.

Superman fights back against the chaos in Hamilton County from alien monsters, giant creatures and super powered community members. While he was able to rescue to Lois, Jon is in the custody of the mastermind who’s ready to put the final steps of his plan in motion. And the reveal makes so much sense I’m kicking myself for missing all the clues writers Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason have laid out since the start of their run.

For a time it looked like Doug Mahnke was starting to slow down. His line work wasn’t as crisp and his characters lacked the level of detail that previously was a trademark. Now Mahnke seems re-energized, which is fitting as his original run on Action Comics made him one of my current favorites and featured one of my all-time best Superman stories.

I’m starting to get a sense of ‘can you top this?’ between Superman and Action Comics. Both titles are crushing it in terms of storyline payoffs and character development. It’s hard to pick a favorite right now making for one of the best times in recent memory to be a Superman fan.

With the adversary’s reveal I’m even more excited than usual for next issue. This series continues to set and exceed new boundaries.
