I have to wait a few more days to share my Kingsman: The Golden Circle review, but Warner Bros. couldn’t find a better guy to direct it than Matthew Vaughn.
In an interview Hay U Guys, Vaughn said he’d talked about directing the next Superman standalone movie. As usual for these deals, including not wanting to overshadow Kingsman promotion, Vaughn stayed vague. ‘I don’t know what I’m going to do next but I have had chats about Superman, I love Superman.’
More encouraging is an interview with Collider where Vaughn discussed his theoretical Man of Steel 2 plans. Not surprisingly they vary wildly from Zack Snyder’s more grounded, realistic Superman.
‘I think my main take would be, it’s really boring but make a Superman film,’ Vaughn said. ‘I just don’t feel a proper Superman—I think [Richard] Donner did it to perfection for that time. Just doing the modern —- I wanna do a modern version of the Donner [version]. Go back to the source material… For me Superman is color, feel-good, heroic. He’s a beacon of light in darkness. And that’s what I think Superman should be.’

I’m in the camp of liking Snyder’s take on Superman as it’s the kind of modern spin that’s really different than what’s come before. But, it would be nice to see Henry Cavill’s Superman have a fresh take on life now that he died. Maybe coming back to life is exactly what Superman needs to truly embrace being the hope of the DC Extended Universe?
From Vaughn’s comments, I bet his deal is nearly done. Warner Bros. made the decision to place its entire universe in Zack Snyder’s hands to at best mixed results. With Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman setting records as the fifth highest grossing comic book movie of all time, Warner Bros. seems more open to the idea of staying truer to the core of the character.
Superman should definitely be lighter, less introspective and more uplifting. And with Vaughn at the helm, there’s little doubt Man of Steel 2 wouldn’t be the most action packed and creative film in the series. Vaughn has such a vivid imagination that it would be fascinating to see who he’d pit against Superman. Maybe Bizarro? Cyborg Superman? Metallo, Braniac or Mongul? I’d definitely be up for Superman versus any of those guys.
Hopefully, we get some news on this soon as a Vaughn led Man of Steel 2 could be the most exciting and potentially game changing announcement from Warner Bros. yet.
