The first Elimination Chamber took the forefront here and with the Smackdown Six putting on another thriller there was no room for a traditional match.
This show marked the start of John Cena’s ascension as he was the featured star of Kurt Angle’s team largely based on Cena’s growing fan support. That has to get ignored now due to certain undesirable team members. Randy Orton also was heavily spotlighted with his performance in the RAW brand elimination match.
Like the 2011 show, the WWE put some effort into creating some stakes here. Co-general managers Stone Cold Steve Austin and Eric Bischoff each could gain something if their respective team won. For Austin, he could have five minutes to stomp a mud hole in Biscoff if his team won while Bischoff would be the sole Raw GM.
Team Austin: Booker T, The Dudley Boyz, Shawn Michaels and RVD vs. Team Bischoff: Chris Jericho, Christian, Mark Henry, Randy Orton (Scott Steiner)
Team Angle: Kurt Angle, John Cena, Bradshaw (Hardcore Holly, Chris Benoit) vs. Team Lesnar: Brock Lesnar, Big Show (A-Train, Matt Morgan and Nathan Jones)
Biggest Need: Hardcore Holly
Bragging rights were at stake for Smackdown while power was up for grabs with the Raw brand match. Randy Orton or Triple H’s team members would each have one night controlling Raw if they won. This was a simple stipulation, but it provided some consequences for the losers.
Team Triple H: Triple H, Batista, Edge (Snitsky) vs. Team Orton: Randy Orton, Chris Jericho (Maven, Chris Benoit)
Team Guerrero: Eddie Guerrero, The Big Show, RVD and John Cena vs. Team Angle: (Kurt Angle, Mark Jindrak, Luther Reigns and Carlito)
Biggest Need: Carlito in Elite form
This year marked the start of the brand elimination matches, which has proven to be the main avenue for traditional Survivor Series matches. This was a nice call-back to the 1995 event, which combined faces and heels onto one team.
Team RAW: Shawn Michaels, Kane, The Big Show, Chris Jericho (Chris Masters) vs. Team SmackDown: Batista, Rey Mysterio Jr., JBL, Randy Orton (Bobby Lashley)
Biggest Need: Lashley another Ruthless Aggression fixture
The formula changed somewhat this time with wrestlers from the three brands — Raw, SmackDown and ECW — could be on the same team.
Team Cena: John Cena, Kane, RVD (Sabu and Bobby Lashley) vs. Team Big Show: Big Show, MVP, Finlay, Umaga (Test)
Team DX: Triple H, Shawn Michaels, CM Punk, Matt Hardy (Jeff Hardy) vs. Team Rated-RKO: Edge, Randy Orton, Johnny Nitro (Mike Knox and Gregory Helms)
While hardly the featured match on the how, 2007 at least had an entertaining elimination match-up.
Kane, Rey Mysterio Jr., Triple H (Jeff Hardy) vs. Umaga, MVP, Finlay (Mr. Kennedy, Big Daddy V)
The HBK/JBL feud was just getting underway, but the more entertaining feud was probably The Miz and Morrison vs Crime Tyme.
Team HBK: Shawn Michaels, Crime Tyme, Rey Mysterio Jr. (The Great Khali) vs. Team JBL: JBL, John Morrison, The Miz, MVP and Kane
Team Raw: Beth Phoenix, Kelly Kelly, Mickie James, Candice Michelle (Jillian Hall) vs. Team SmackDown: Maryse, Michelle McCool, Natalya (Victoria and Maria)
Team Orton: Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes, William Regal, Mark Henry (Shelton Benjamin) vs. Team Batista: Batista, CM Punk, Kofi Kingston, Matt Hardy and R-Truth
This year’s event largely focused on midcard feuds namely the Miz and Morrison explosion and Kofi Kingston and Randy Orton. (Side Note: This was right around the time my interest in WWE was waning at least in terms of getting figures of every character and keeping up with their latest attire/gimmick changes. Mattel has made most of them at this point, but I’m putting in what I have in my collection.)
Team Miz: The Miz, Dolph Ziggler, Jack Swagger, Sheamus, Drew McIntyre vs. Team Morrison: John Morrison, Finlay, Matt Hardy (Shelton Benjamin, Evan Bourne)
Team Kingston: Kofi Kingston, Mark Henry, MVP, Christian and R-Truth vs. Team Orton: Randy Orton, CM Punk, Ted DiBiase Jr., Cody Rhodes and William Regal
Team Mickie: Mickie James, Eve Torres, Kelly Kelly, Melina (Gail Kim) vs. Team Michelle: Michelle McCool, Alicia Fox, Beth Phoenix, Layla (Jillian Hall)
