The Terrifics #1
My gut reaction was The Terrifics was going to be the crown gem of The New Age of Heroes. It was going to be DC’s answer to the Fantastic Four, which was fitting since Marvel doesn’t seem all that interested in reviving Marvel’s First Family.
The team of Mr. Terrific, Metamorpho, Phantom Girl and Plastic Man was a fun, oddball mix and Jeff Lemire was writing it with Ivan Reis providing the art. That’s as close as a sure thing as you can get in comics. Even with high expectations, The Terrifics was a blast from start to finish.
Mister Terrific is called to investigate a bizarre incident at Stagg Industries and gets whisked away to another dimension. Good thing he’s not alone.
The Fantastic Four comparisons are valid with a fun twist. Mr. Terrific easily fits into the Mister Fantastic role with his high level intellect, but it’s Metamorpho and Plastic Man who immediately fall into The Thing and Human Torch dynamic. Phantom Girl fittingly comes in like a mystery since longtime readers know she’s out of her time period. Lemire immediately showed how fresh this team will be with Mister Terrific giving Metamorpho the proper formulas to survive in different elements and Plastic Man already vying to be a scene stealer.
Reis’ art is like watching George Perez in his prime in 2018. Reis packs so much detail in every panel and Lemire really gives him freedom to get as creative as he wants in this first issue. For an artist like Reis, characters like Plastic Man and Metamorpho should provide a ton of opportunities to have fun with their expressions and power use.
I’ve got a great feeling about this one and that’s even before the final page with a very surprising appearance. With a lot of changes going on right now in DC, The Terrifics looks like it has a legit shot at being one of DC’s best titles for 2018.
