In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos is going to attempt to do something that’s never been done before in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s going to assemble the Infinity Stones. Possessing all six stones will give Thanos unlimited and unrivaled power. If he does, no force in the universe — not even the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange and Spider-Man can stop him.
Thanos hasn’t been the only MCU character to use an Infinity Stone. Here’s a refresher on all the characters who have possessed an Infinity Stone in the MCU.
Red Skull and Arnim Zola
To turn the tide of World War II and to aid in his succession from Hitler, the Red Skull tracked down the Tesseract. Unaware of its ability to open gateways and interdimensional travel, Red Skull and Zola used a fraction of its energies to power high intensity weaponry. In final battle with Captain America, Red Skull unwittingly tapped into the Tesseract’s dimensional teleportation abilities though it’s unclear if he survived and if so, where he’s been transported.
Under Loki’s influence, Dr. Selvig fully tapped into the Tesseract for its intended purpose. Loki used the Tesseract to bring the Chitauri to Earth where he hoped to use them to defeat the Avengers and conquer the planet.
The Mind Stone
In his haste to accept Thanos’ deal to give him Earth to control, Loki never realized he had in his possession one of the most powerful weapons in the universe. Using his scepter as a means to take control of others’ minds, Loki used Hawkeye and Dr. Selvig in his bid to retrieve the Tesseract for Thanos. Never realizing that at one point, he was in control of two of the powerful Infinity Stones.
Baron Von Strucker and Hydra
Unlike Loki, Baron Von Strucker and his Hydra scientists utilized the full power of the Mind Stone, still encased in Loki’s scepter. They used the Mind Stone to create super powered individuals. Only two survived the process and Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch ultimately used their gifts to help save humanity as members of the Avengers. This would be the first of two uses of the Mind Stone that helped create Avengers to aid in defeating Thanos.
Recognizing its power, Stark harnessed the Mind Stone as a means to complete the final step in his Ultron Project. This would quickly prove to have disastrous lasting consequences not just for the Avengers, but for the nations of Sokovia and Wakanda.
Having a calculated approach to the power in his grasp, Ultron knew the scepter wasn’t the true source of power. He used it to control Helen Cho, who created a synthetic body for Ultron to utilize that would become The Vision.
The android Avenger makes the most use of his Infinity Stone than anyone else in the MCU. With its power, Vision is able to fly, project solar energy and increase/decrease his density. It is unknown what affect it would have if the Stone was ripped away from The Vision.
An unwitting user of the stone, Jane was far more focused on removing the Aether as prolonged exposure to its power would kill her. On several occasions when she was startled, the Aether would trigger a self defense concussive force.
The leader of the Dark Elves twice attempted to use the liquid Aether and its dark matter conversion abilities to overwhelm and demolish Asgardian forces who opposed him. Malekith came dangerously close to using the Convergence to wipe out the galaxy.
The Power Stone
Passing judgment on unworthy worlds, The Celestials harnessed the Power Stone to wipe out civilizations. Ultimately, they decided the power was too great to remain in their possession.
Recognizing that the Power Stone made him subject to no one, not even Thanos, Ronan seized the stone and incorporated it into his hammer.
Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax and Rocket
In a desperate gamble to stop Ronan, the four surviving Guardians of the Galaxy were barely able to distribute the destructive power of the stone from killing them before briefly using it to destroy Ronan.
The Time Stone
Facing a seemingly unwinnable battle against Dormammu, Dr. Strange used the Eye of Agamotto, which houses the Time Stone, to revert time to repeat their encounter and restore the Hong Kong Sanctum.
As of this time the user and location of the Soul Stone remains a mystery.
