Batman – Prelude to the Wedding:
Batgirl vs. The Riddler #1

batman prelude to the wedding batgirl vs riddler

After the Nightwing vs. Hush prelude to the wedding special, I wasn’t sure if this lead-in event had legs. Fortunately, Batgirl vs. Riddler got things back on track with a fun, if inconsequential, tale pitting Batgirl against one of Batman’s arch foes.

Tim Seeley writes a pretty great one-off Riddler story as Edward Nygma has Batgirl tracking down four kidnapped victims. But as always is the case with The Riddler, there’s a deeper meaning behind these selected individuals. Saying more would completely spoil the fun, but Seeley really delivers on a satisfying payoff.

Minkyu Jung is one of the DC artists whose style doesn’t work for every character, but she’s so talented it doesn’t matter. Batgirl is one of those characters that’s a great fit for Jung making for a sharp looking issue. Jung quickly connects on Batgirl’s sense of movement striking a better balance of playful and serious than some of the more recent Batgirl artists. Jordie Bellaire’s colors are the standard high quality work we’re used to seeing from her.

I really enjoyed this tale as well as the greatest sense that the events in this prelude special actually do matter. There’s a nice tease to the final installment as well as the next chapter pitting Red Hood vs Anarky.
