Box office roundup
Iron Man 3, Pain & Gain, Star Trek Into Darkness, The Great Gatsby
1. Star Trek Into Darkness – $84 million [debut week] The sequel to the vastly popular 2009 relaunch of the Trek franchise easily claimed the top spot this week even if it didn’t perform as well as anticipated.
That’s largely due to the strength of the competition as holdovers “Iron Man 3″ and “The Great Gatsby” took away some of the potential Trek audience. It’s better than the $75 million the relaunch earned, which has to be somewhat of a disappointment for Paramount Pictures considering the high regard the relaunch is held. More

Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) in “Iron Man 3.”
1. Iron Man 3 - $72.1 million [2nd week; $232 million] After having the second highest grossing opening ever, it would have been shocking for this not to retain its top spot.
And while it was closer than anticipated, “IM3″ led the box office for a 2nd consecutive weekend and it went over $800 million worldwide as it gets ever closer to $1 billion. Currently it’s at $949 million. More

Iron Man 3, Oblivion, Pain & Gain

Zade Rosenthal/Marvel Studios
Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow) in “Iron Man 3.”
1. Iron Man 3 – $175.3 million [debut week] With over $340 million from its international debut last week, the biggest question was how big this was going to do in the wake of the massive showing from last year’s Marvel Studios mega-blockbuster “Marvel’s The Avengers.” Hinting at Walt Disney/Marvel Studios’ long-term prospects with the Avengers films, “IM3″ had the second best weekend ever and only trailed “Avengers’” $207.4 million opening.
It stacked up pretty well as it had a very solid $15.6 million Thursday night opening, which wasn’t that far behind “Avengers’” $18.7 million. “Iron Man 2” opened to $7.6 million when it opened in 2010. Worldwide, “Iron Man 3″ has already earned $680 million in its first two weeks and it’s yet to open in 54 worldwide markets. After the “Avengers” success, I questioned how well the sequel could do, but audiences definitely love this franchise and if Disney/Marvel Studios can keep the excitement building for the 2015 sequel, “Avengers 2″ has a very good chance at not just beating out its predecessor, but beating “Titanic” and “Avatar” as the highest grossing film of all time.

Box office roundup
42, Chadwick Boseman, Dwayne Johnson, Mark Wahlberg, Michael Bay, Oblivion, Pain & Gain, The Croods, Tom Cruise
1. Pain & Gain – $20.5 million [debut week] Maybe Michael Bay needs to stick with The Transformers and Martin Lawrence & Will Smith?
Bay’s first non-franchise film since 2005′s “The Island” only managed $8 million more despite the star power of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Mark Wahlberg. Johnson’s “Snitch” ($13.1 million) and Wahlberg’s “Broken City” ($8.1 million) didn’t do much for audiences either as the two combined barely beat out “P&G.”
It could be that audiences are starting to tire of Johnson and Wahlberg or just that the story of three bodybuilders caught in a kidnapping/extortion scheme gone bad wasn’t all that thrilling to people. Then there’s also that looming mega-blockbuster called “Iron Man 3″ that may have audiences waiting this week out to kick off their summer movie season. Either way don’t look for this one to have a strong showing in the Top 5.

Jack (TOM CRUISE) patrols the ruins of the Empire State Building in “Oblivion.”
1. Oblivion – $38.2 million [debut week] – This sci-fi epic did prove to be a return to A-list status for Tom Cruise as it opened better than his last two films “Jack Reacher” ($15 million) and “Rock of Ages” ($14 million) combined and his highest-grossing opening since 2006′s “Mission: Impossible III’s” $47.7 million debut.

Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) talks with Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford).
1. 42 – $27 million [debut week] The Jackie Robinson biopic benefitted from great timing – the 66th anniversary of Robinson integrating baseball – and the lack of any feel-good sports films. With an A+ Cinemascore, this is going to be a big hit. It nearly made back its $40 million budget opening weekend! Hopefully this paves the way for more biopics of important black figures as the last one was 2004′s “Ray.”

LUCAS BLACK as Pee Wee Reese and CHADWICK BOSEMAN as Jackie Robinson
The Jackie Robinson biopic “42,” didn’t strike out with audiences on opening day, getting on base with $9.2 million Friday and looking at a $27 million opening weekend.
That would make “42″ far and away the highest grossing opening for any baseball film. The previous record holder was the 2006 hit “Benchwarmers,” which brought in $19.6 million.

Evil Dead, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Jurassic Park, Sam Raimi, The Croods, Tyler Perry's Temptation
1. Evil Dead – $26 million [debut week] Sony’s remake of the Sam Raimi cult classic scored the second highest opening for a horror film this year. Jessica Chastain’s “Mama” brought in $28 million. With this successful opening it seems likely there will be another installment of this revamp of this popular franchise. More

G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Paramount Pictures

Variety’s Andrew Stewart sent out this tweet: Yo Joe! After a $132 mil opening for G.I. JOE: RETALIATION, Paramount said it will move forward with a third JOE.
Internationally, “Retaliation” earned $80.3 million, based in part on the strength of the film’s 3D format — supposedly the reason why the film was delayed from its June 2012 original release date.
The gambit clearly paid off for Paramount, which was in need of a new franchise after losing Thor, Captain America and Iron Man once Walt Disney acquired the Marvel Studio properties.
With Michael Bay working on a fourth Transformers film and GI Joe’s resurgence, Paramount may have set up a new one-two summer blockbuster punch for years to come. Stay tuned for more Joe news!

Snake-Eyes (Ray Park) and Roadblock (Dwayne Johnson) in a shoot out.
1. G.I. Joe: Retaliation – $50 million [debut week] The year’s first summer blockbuster-type has done solid, if not spectacular numbers its opening weekend following its Thursday take. This slightly trailed “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra’s” $54.7 million opening, but it has a far better long-term future especially since there’s no obvious must-see films coming out next weekend.
