LUCAS BLACK as Pee Wee Reese and CHADWICK BOSEMAN as Jackie Robinson
The Jackie Robinson biopic “42,” didn’t strike out with audiences on opening day, getting on base with $9.2 million Friday and looking at a $27 million opening weekend.
That would make “42″ far and away the highest grossing opening for any baseball film. The previous record holder was the 2006 hit “Benchwarmers,” which brought in $19.6 million.

Evil Dead, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Jurassic Park, Sam Raimi, The Croods, Tyler Perry's Temptation
1. Evil Dead – $26 million [debut week] Sony’s remake of the Sam Raimi cult classic scored the second highest opening for a horror film this year. Jessica Chastain’s “Mama” brought in $28 million. With this successful opening it seems likely there will be another installment of this revamp of this popular franchise. More

G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Paramount Pictures

Variety’s Andrew Stewart sent out this tweet: Yo Joe! After a $132 mil opening for G.I. JOE: RETALIATION, Paramount said it will move forward with a third JOE.
Internationally, “Retaliation” earned $80.3 million, based in part on the strength of the film’s 3D format — supposedly the reason why the film was delayed from its June 2012 original release date.
The gambit clearly paid off for Paramount, which was in need of a new franchise after losing Thor, Captain America and Iron Man once Walt Disney acquired the Marvel Studio properties.
With Michael Bay working on a fourth Transformers film and GI Joe’s resurgence, Paramount may have set up a new one-two summer blockbuster punch for years to come. Stay tuned for more Joe news!

Snake-Eyes (Ray Park) and Roadblock (Dwayne Johnson) in a shoot out.
1. G.I. Joe: Retaliation – $50 million [debut week] The year’s first summer blockbuster-type has done solid, if not spectacular numbers its opening weekend following its Thursday take. This slightly trailed “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra’s” $54.7 million opening, but it has a far better long-term future especially since there’s no obvious must-see films coming out next weekend.

1. The Croods – $44 million [debut week] The year’s first heavily promoted animated film did gangbusters as families flocked to DreamWorks Animation’s latest effort, but it was hardly the only newcomer that had a surprisingly successful opening weekend.

1. Oz the Great and Powerful - $42.4 million [2nd week; $145 million] The family fantasy film had no trouble retaining its top spot for a second week and seems on track to hold it through the rest of the month. Its biggest competition now is “G.I. Joe Retaliation,” which is set for the last weekend of March. With the highly anticipated “Spring Breakers” set for release wide next week, it seems that James Franco is poised to accomplish what Jessica Chastain did earlier in January by starring in both of the weekend’s top two two films.

Glinda (Michelle Williams) and Oz (James Franco) prepare to confront The Wicked Witch.
1. Oz the Great and Powerful - $80.3 million [debut week] Disney had high hopes in making this prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” and they were rewarded with a magical best of 2013-opening with the Sam Raimi production.
With little in the way of family films to contend with in the next few weeks, this could retain the top spot until “G.I. Joe Retaliation.” Star Mila Kunis already announced that the cast is signed on for sequels so the first round of meetings to discuss another route on the yellow brick road of box office success.

Warner Bros. Pictures
Jack (Nicholas Hoult) climbs the beanstalk.
1. Jack the Giant Slayer – $28 million [debut week] This did slightly better than “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters,” which only managed $19 million its opening weekend, but this has little chance of recouping its $195 million budget. This was the third underwhelming opening for a Bryan Singer-directed film following the disappointing “Valkyrie” ($21 million) and “Superman Returns” ($52 million off a $270 million budget).

A Good Day to Die Hard, Bruce Willis, Dark Skies, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Identity Thief, Jason Bateman, Julianne Hough, melissa mccarthy, Safe Haven, Snitch

Guy D’Alema/Universal Studios
JASON BATEMAN and MELISSA MCCARTHY lead the cast of “Identity Thief”, an all-star comedy in which a regular guy is forced to extreme measures to clear his name. With everything to lose after his identity is stolen, he’ll find out how crazed you can get trying to settle a bad credit score.
1. Identity Thief – $14.1 million [3rd week; $94 million in total] The year’s highest-grossing film returned to the top of the box office and is maintaining its hold on audiences. This was definitely solid scheduling for Universal, which took advantage of the male-action star heavy January and February to slot its uncontested comedy. Audiences who just wanted to laugh have no other option and as a result, are flocking to catch this Jason Bateman-Melissa McCarthy collaboration.

A Good Day to Die Hard, Beautiful Creatures, Bruce Willis, Identity Thief, Jai Courtney, Safe Haven

1. A Good Day to Die Hard – $25 million [debut week; $33.2 million total] Call this the strength of a solid brand name. Sylvester Stallone’s “Bullet to the Head” only was able to muster $4.5 million its opening weekend while Arnold Schwarzenegger’s “The Last Stand” earned $6.2 million, marks Bruce Willis’ fifth turn in the “Die Hard” series surpassed with its $7.2 million haul on Friday despite far less favorable reviews. “Stand” scored 59% on rottentomatoes.com and “Head” managed 49% while “Die Hard” scored a pitiful 17% rating. The morale of the story? Schwarzenegger is already set to return to familiar franchises “The Terminator” and “Conan” while Stallone is starting work on “The Expendables 3.” As for “Die Hard 5?” This will struggle to match “Live Free or Die Hard’s” franchise best $134.5 million and have trouble reaching the $100 million threshold.
