Celebrity Encounters: The Rock, @TheRock

The Rock 2013 WWE ChampionMy pal Jay Ryan, has had quite a few encounters with celebrities and with “G.I. Joe Retaliation” released this weekend, I figured it was the perfect time to share his run in with The Rock or Dwayne Johnson in Philadelphia.

DJKnightRida and I headed around to the historical Rocky Balboa statue … as we got closer and closer, we noticed the bright lights surrounding the statue. Then as we pulled right us … BAM!!! WWE Film crew had setup. We quickly parked the car and I grabbed my programs. We marched over and it was clear…. we were about to witness epic glory. More

Celebrity Encounter: Channing Tatum

Channing TatumMy pal Jay Ryan got a chance to meet Channing Tatum, who will once again be reprising his role as Duke in “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” which opens Thursday. I’ve enjoyed Tatum’s work and glad to see he has refused to allow himself to be typecast as the pretty boy as he’s shown impressive versatility in films like “The Vow,” “Haywire” and “21 Jump Street.”

Channing was a guy I was very curious if he’d be cool since he seems like he’d either be a very down to Earth guy or the cliche jock who could care less about the little people.  Here’s Jay’s encounter: More

Celebrity Encounters: Bill Murray

Bill MurrayMy pal Tim Warfield had a completely random run-in with Bill Murray a few weeks ago. Murray is one of those actors who will forever be in my do no wrong good graces for his iconic role in “Ghostbusters,” but he keeps on cranking out other memorable roles such as “Groundhog Day,” “Scrooged,” “Lost in Translation” and “Moonrise Kingdom.”

As a 49ers fan, I’m contractually obligated to hate on Tim until the end of next football season since he’s a Ravens fan, but he was nice enough to share his encounter: More

Celebrity encounter: Stephen Spielberg

My fellow Washington Area Film Critic Association member Kevin McCarthy a pretty awesome life. He travels to lavish hotels and kicks it with your favorite movie stars like you or I go to the grocery store. You’d want to hate, but the dude is one of the nicest and friendliest guys you’ll ever meet in the critic circles.Steven Spielberg pic

Kevin has a number of celebrity meetings, but I asked him to give me his favorite and right away he knew who that would be – his run-ins with Oscar-winning director Stephen Spielberg – one of the best filmmakers of all-time and the creative force behind classics like “Jaws,” Saving Private Ryan,” “Lincoln” and of course, “The Indiana Jones” trilogy. I’ll just keep pretending pod people  made “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” Anyway, here’s Kevin: More

Celebrity encounter: Chris Jericho – WWE superstar, Dancing With the Stars performer

Chris Jericho with WCW and WWF world title beltsDustin Smith had the good fortune of meeting Chris Jericho. Jericho has always struck me as being one of the smarter guys in wrestling and someone who enjoys it, but isn’t addicted to it. He’s on my short list of wrestlers I’d like to meet (in addition to Sting, Edge and Shawn Michaels) without worrying that they’d be such tools that I couldn’t look at them in the same way again.

Jericho’s biggest claim to wrestling immortality is that he’s the first guy to unify the WCW and WWE world titles by beating legends “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and “The Rock” Dwayne Johnson on the same night. He’s also been responsible for some of the best WWE moments in the last 20 years including the last great wrestling feud with Michaels in 2008. More

Celebrity Encounters: San Francisco 49ers’ Superbowl 23 MVP and Hall of Famer Jerry Rice

Jerry Rice makes another big play in Superbowl 23.

Jerry Rice makes another big play in Superbowl 23.

Just so there’s no confusion for Randy Moss, Jerry Rice is the only best ever wide receiver in the NFL. Quick gaudy stat line: 1,549 catches, 22,895 receiving yards and 208 touchdowns. Jerry Rice and Steve Young with Lombardi Trophy after Superbowl XXIX win

Moss has some catching up to do as he’s managed 982 receptions, 15,292 receiving yards and 157 touchdowns. Oh, and Rice has three Superbowl rings and one Superbowl MVP in his resume.

My all-time favorite sports moment was watching him embrace Steve Young in Super Bowl XXIX after the two combined for three touchdowns in an easy rout of the San Diego Chargers.

My cousin, Duane, actually met Rice – one of the small list of celebrities I’d turn into babbling idiot if I met so it’s probably good that I didn’t get a chance to meet one of my sports heroes. Here’s Duane’s encounter: More

Celebrity Encounters: Alan Tudyk

Alan Tudyk at the “Wreck-It Ralph” premiere.

My fellow WAFCA member Eddie Pasa had an opportunity to meet with Alan Tudyk. Tudyk is one of those actors who is instantly familiar to you even if you can’t place the name. He’s appeared in films like “A Knight’s Tale” with Heath Ledger, “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story” and “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” while “Firefly” Browncoats lovingly best know him for his role as Wash.

He’s also an acclaimed voice actor. You’re likely most familiar with his work as Sonny in “I, Robot” alongside Will Smith, but he’s also been a regular in the “Ice Age” franchise, “Young Justice” and most recently as King Candy in “Wreck-It Ralph“. That’s enough introduction for me, here’s Eddie! More

Christian Bale may be Batman, but he’s a super man

I’d written before about how Christian Bale is pretty high on my cool celebrity list for going to the Aurora, Colorado hospital to visit some of the victims in the shooting tragedy and Bale is at it again. Zach G talking to Christian Bale

This time he called Zach Guillot, an 8-year-old with leukemia and major Batman fan, to have a discussion about The Dark Knight. More

Celebrity encounter – “Star Trek: Voyager’s” Robert Picardo

Regular reader Barry Murray got a chance to meet Robert Picardo.

Robert Picardo in "Star Trek: Voyager"For non-Trekkies like me, he played The Doctor on “Star Trek: Voyager” from 1995 to 2001 and also went on to star as Richard Woolsey on “Stargate SG-1″ from 2004 to 2007. I’m much more familiar with Picardo’s voice-acting work as he played Amazo on “Justice League Unlimited.” We also share the same birthday so he gets major points for that.

Here’s Barry’s run-in: More

Celebrity Encounters: WWE’s Sheamus

A few days ago, I asked for your encounters with celebrities, however random or carefully planned out they may be. Mrwrestlingdude kicks things off with his encounter with WWE Superstar and former champion Sheamus:

I went to Money In The Bank here in Phoenix in 2012 and learned that Sheamus was doing a signing here the day before at an outdoor mall. I really wanted to go, but these were unfortunate circumstances, seeing as it was the middle of summer in Arizona OUTSIDE.

My mom however, being the awesome mom she is agreed to take me ;D . The signing was only set to take place for one hour, but I would estimate 500 to 700 people showed up so I’m glad I was early.  More
