New on DVD/Blu-Ray
Arnold Schwarzenegger, Beautiful Creatures, Jason Statham, Jennifer Lopez, Parker, Side Effects, The Last Stand

The Last Stand – This is a vintage 80s movie throwback featuring 80s action staple Arnold Schwarzenegger as a sheriff of a quaint town that’s suddenly overrun by a drug cartel. It performed terribly at the box office, but it’s a lot of fun partially due to Schwarzenegger being able to have a little fun with his age. If you like 80s action films, you should enjoy this one.

Parker – Jason Statham couldn’t bring his “Transporter” charm to save his latest action film about a thief seeking revenge of his double-crossing crew with the help of Jennifer Lopez.
If you’re choosing between the two “Expendables” star’s solo efforts, the old pro wins this round. More

Cloud Atlas, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D, The Wachowski siblings

Warner Bros. Pictures
(From left) Sonmi-451 (DOONA BAE) as Sonmi-451 and Ha-Joo Chang (JIM STURGESS) take to the skyline.
Cloud Atlas – A very long, exhausting and frustrating experience that tries to weave a series of random subplots together and largely fails. The Wachowski Siblings do manage to have some fun in the exhilarating futuristic subplot, but it’s too much of a chore to slog through for it. Just stick to “The Matrix.” More

New on DVD/Blu-Ray
Braniac, David Oyelowo, Geoff Johns, Jack Reacher, Josh Duhamel, Rosamund Pike, Safe Haven, Superman, Superman: Unbound, Tom Cruise

Jack Reacher – Tom Cruise stars in this limp drama/action film about a homicide investigator who is determined to get to the bottom of a military sniper who goes off the deep end and shoots five random people in broad daylight.
Cruise is his steady, consistent presence, but the film is dull despite some interesting supporting performances from Rosamund Pike, Jai Courtney, Robert Duvall and David Oyelowo. More

Barbara Streisand, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe, Seth Rogen, Silver Linings Playbook, The Guilt Trip

The Weinstein Company
Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence) and Pat (Bradley Cooper) make a deal.
Silver Linings Playbook - Of all the Oscar contenders, this had the biggest actor’s showcase and recognition as it received nominations in all four acting categories: Best Actor (Bradley Cooper), Best Supporting Actress (Jackie Weaver), Best Supporting Actor (Robert De Niro) and Best Actress winner Jennifer Lawrence. The film is a fascinating character study of a man (Cooper) recently discharged from a mental institution looking to get his life back on track and reunite with his wife. But life back home with his parents gets even more complicated when he encounters a woman (Lawrence) who can relate to him in a way he never thought possible. More

New on DVD/Blu-Ray
Emma Stone, Ewan McGregor, Frances McDormand, Gangster Squad, Jurassic Park 3D, Matt Damon, Naomi Watts, Promised Land, Ryan Gosling, The Impossible
“The Impossible“- I loved Jennifer Lawrence in “Silver Linings Playbook” and thought she was great as usual, but Naomi Watts’ was at another level here in this film based on a true story of a family of five trying to reunite after the horrific 2004 tsunami. Ewan McGregor and Tom Holland provide fantastic supporting roles in last year’s most unflinching film. More

Christoph Waltz, Django Unchained, Jamie Foxx, Quentin Tarantino
Only one big new release this week – Quentin Tarantino’s controversial “Django Unchained.”
I felt much of the controversy was overblown as Tarantino is really just trying to spark dialogue while entertaining people in his own fashion and I think more than any other film in 2012, “Django Unchained” definitely stirred up some raw emotions in every viewer.

Aaron Tveit, Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Judd Apatow, Les Misérables, Leslie Mann, Paul Rudd, This Is 40
I’m really starting to loathe this new trend of Friday new release days as opposed to everything coming out on Tuesday.
I can understand the logic since more people get paid on Friday than Tuesday and most folks aren’t likely to watch a new movie until Friday anyway, but still. There’s the principle of getting rid of “new release Tuesday.” Friday’s got enough fun stuff associated with it. Anyway, here’s the two new releases to wrap your week. More

New on DVD/Blu-Ray
Kathryn Bigelow, Marion Cotillard, Rust and Bone, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Zero Dark Thirty
There’s some quality films coming out this week starting with Tuesday’s new offerings. This week marks an unusual one as two big releases are being held until Friday so consider this part 1 of the week’s options.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Peter Jackson returned to Middle Earth with this prequel to his Oscar-winning “Lord of the Rings” saga. While it had solid 3D, Bilbo Baggins’ story wasn’t as exciting as Jackson’s LOTR films and feels like one book stretched out to three films. More

Rise of the Guardians – This was a film that deserved a lot more love last year and hopefully it finds a well-deserved audience on the home video market. Hugh Jackman, Alec Baldwin, Chris Pine, Isla Fisher and Jude Law lend their voices to holiday/weather icons like Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and Jack Frost on an adventure to stop the world from plunging into darkness conceived by Pitch Black. New on DVD/Blu-Ray
Adrianne Palicki, Chris Hemsworth, Gerard Butler, Josh Hutcherson, Playing for Keeps, Red Dawn, Wreck-It Ralph
This isn’t the best week for new releases as far as I’m concerned, which is just as well as next week has more than a few I’ll be adding to my collection.

“WRECK-IT RALPH (voice of John C. Reilly) amongst other video game bad guys including Zangief, Bowser, zombie, ninja and M. Bison in a therapy session.
Wreck-It Ralph - This video game theme film looked to have all the makings of a classic, but was done in by its two unlikable leads and a dull second act. Still, I liked this more than “Brave” as Ralph’s supporting cast was entertaining enough that I’d pay to watch their movie. More
