In the U.S., its $538 million haul allowed it to surpass “The Dark Knight’s” $533 million take while worldwide, its $1.33 billion gross dropped “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, part 2″ to the #4 spot with $1.32 billion.
Next up is “Titanic” and “Avatar” on both fronts.
Domestically, “Avengers” could become the #2 highest grossing film of all-time as it trails “Titanic’s” $658 million take by $120 million. For the week of May 25 to May 31, “Avengers” earned $55 million and will likely make around $25 million to $30 million this weekend. If that remains the pattern, it has a shot at sinking “Titanic” by the end of July. “Avengers” would have easily knocked “Titanic” from the #2 spot had James Cameron not released a 3D version in April as by that point, it had earned $600 million, which “Avengers” likely would have overcome by the end of June.
At $760 million, “Avatar” is likely out of reach as getting another $220 million seems like a task that even the Hulk can’t handle.
Worldwide, Cameron’s 1-2 punch fares a bit stronger in terms of keeping “The Avengers” from the top spot. “Titanic” grossed $1.83 billion while “Avatar” is a distant $2.7 billion. “Avengers” won’t get shown in Japan until August and “Avengers” tie-ins have fared well: “Iron Man” brought in $8 million, “The Incredible Hulk” earned $1.6 million, “Iron Man 2″ grossed $12 million, “Thor” earned $5 million and “Captain America: The First Avenger” brought in $3 million. The boost from Japan will likely be minimal on the big picture scale, but it may help get “Avengers” closer to “Titanic.”
