Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Last Stand

The Last Stand – This is a vintage 80s movie throwback featuring 80s action staple Arnold Schwarzenegger as a sheriff of a quaint town that’s suddenly overrun by a drug cartel. It performed terribly at the box office, but it’s a lot of fun partially due to Schwarzenegger being able to have a little fun with his age.  If you like 80s action films, you should enjoy this one.

Parker – Jason Statham couldn’t bring his “Transporter” charm to save his latest action film about a thief seeking revenge of his double-crossing crew with the help of Jennifer Lopez.

If you’re choosing between the two “Expendables” star’s solo efforts, the old pro wins this round. More

Box office roundup – Feb. 3, 2013 – Audiences hot for “Warm Bodies” while “Bullet to the Head” comes out shooting blanks

1. Warm Bodies – $20 million [debut week] I rarely have any real interest in what film wins the box office, but I was salivating at the ways I can work in the irony of a movie called “Bullet to the Head” beating out a zombie movie for the top spot. Alas, audiences were in the mood for some fresh material [oh the irony] and opted for the zombie romantic comedy, which had a better than expected opening and easily beat out its fellow newcomers. Depending on word-of-mouth, this could have a lengthy stay in the Top 5 and hopefully will inspire studios to try so more “out-there” ideas. More

1. Mama – $31 million [debut week] Jessica Chastain proved to be an undeniable draw for a second consecutive week as her thriller in the woods beat out new films from former bankable draws Mark Wahlberg and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Guillermo del Toro-produced thriller’s creepy trailers struck a mark with audiences clearly looking for a scare. Speaking of bankable, the film has already earned back its $15 million budget so Chastain is proving she can draw audiences from numerous demographics. She’s probably Hollywood’s most in-demand leading lady now. More

Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Last Stand

Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as ‘Ray Owens’ in “THE LAST STAND.”

One look at Arnold Schwarzenegger’s new film, “The Last Stand,” and you’ll likely write it off as being yet another brainless action movie starring the 80s icon looking to return to his glory days after a stint as California’s “Governator.”

Don’t be too quick to write it off though as while it does get a bit over the top at times, “The Last Stand” is an explosive throwback that will thrill action fans who love watching tough guys blow stuff up. More

Film Flashback: “Terminator 3 – Rise of the Machines” (2003)

Terminator 3 - Kristina Loken and Arnold Schwarzenegger poster zoomFollowing the amazing “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” wasn’t going to be easy for anyone. James Cameron departed the franchise that helped propel him to A-list director status and series regular Linda Hamilton also opted not to return leaving Arnold Schwarzenegger alone to keep the Terminator machine rolling with director Jonathan Mostow (“Surrogates”) for a different, yet very familiar direction for the franchise with “Terminator 3 – Rise of the Machines.”  More

I’m really digging this resurgence of my favorite action stars from the 80s getting back to doing what they do best. Beyond “The Expendables” franchise, we’ve got Arnold Schwarzenegger in “The Last Stand,” Bruce Willis in “A Good Day to Die Hard” and now Sylvester Stallone’s latest, “Bullet to the Head.”  More

New on Blu-Ray/DVD for Nov. 20, 2012 – The Expendables 2

Really uneventful new release week with the only new film to coming out. It makes sense though as when I think of Thanksgiving, I think of shoot-outs, fist fights and explosions so it’s appropriate that “The Expendables 2” is coming out tomorrow.

People complained that this was too much of the same, but really it’s 80s and 90s action stars fighting and shooting stuff up and the cameos by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and Chuck Norris were great. My only gripe was not enough Jet Li, which I hope gets fixed for Expendables 3.

Hot Toys reveals “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” battle damaged T-800

Hot Toys just revealed their latest take on “The Terminator” with this 12″ version of the battle-damaged T-800 [the "good" Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger played in the follow-up to James Cameron's 1984 hit.] I didn’t get scare too much watching movies when I was little, but for some reason, the skeletal Terminator at the end freaked me out for years so I had a hard time accepting T-800 as a hero. Box office roundup – Sept. 9, 2012 – “The Possesion” inhabits the top spot again

Natasha Calis stars as ‘Em’ in “THE POSSESSION.”

1. The Possession – [$26.7 million total; 2nd week] Broken record time again. September is a miserable, awful, completely worthless month for anything close to quality movies and with less than stellar new options, last week’s champ didn’t have to struggle too hard to retain its title. Look for the new “Resident Evil” to take the top spot next week if only because it has a devoted fan following and offers something audiences want to see this month. More
