The Top 10 things I thought about the 2013 Oscars

I’ll have a list of all the Oscar winners in a bit, but here’s a few random thoughts about this year’s edition:

Halle Berry's 2013 Oscars dress10. Halle Berry saying that the James Bond franchise was the one she’s most proudest to be a part of despite only appearing in one Bond film compared to the three X-Men films she’s starred in and yet thinking she got it completely right.

9. That completely awkward guessing game of trying to figure out what was going on with poor Renee Zellweger.

8. Wondering how few groups Seth MacFarlane had left on his “Who can I offend now?” list by the time the show ended. I’ve gotta figure there was very little white space left on his board. More

Birthday wishes – Feb. 21, 2013 – Jennifer Love Hewitt, Kelsey Grammer and Elen Page

Jennifer Love Hewitt hotJennifer Love Hewitt (34) – I’ve got nothing.  On behalf of every straight man out there – just stay awesome. But I think it’s about time for another “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” don’t you?

????????Kelsey Grammer (58) – Loathe as I am to admit it, there was one aspect of “X-Men: The Last Stand” I did enjoy and it was your portrayal of Beast. Call up Bryan Singer and find some way to get into “X-Men: Days of Future Past” so you can be in a good X-Men movie.

14th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - ArrivalsEllen Page (26) – As another survivor of “X-Men: The Last Stand,” you’ve already made a great call in signing on to “Days of Future Past” and hoping that this will be as significant role in the film as it was in the comic. You’re criminally overdue for a hit film since 2010′s “Inception.”

Alan RickmanAlan Rickman (67) – After suffering through the franchise-killer that was “A Good Day to Die Hard,” I appreciate even more your role in getting it started. Here’s to another year of making more memorable characters like Hans Gruber and “Harry Potter’s” Professor Snape.

Billy Connolly, Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay and Pauline Collins star in “Quartet.”

“Quartet” is a quaint, simple film that takes an unflinching look at life’s later years when the applause has ended, the talent faded and making the most of the years still ahead.

In lesser hands, this glimpse of a future of failing memory and ever-betraying body would just be crushingly depressing, but this ensemble is a lively fun bunch that warrants several curtain calls. More

New poster of Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Just like the Harry Potter franchise, I’m getting in on another popular novel series by way of the movies. The first installment was excellent so I’m looking forward to the sequel, Catching Fire, which is slated to come to theaters on Nov. 22 in a prime holiday blockbuster slot. Here’s the poster tease, but of course it means little to me since I’m not reading the books. For all of you who have, should I like this even more than “The Hunger Games?”

“Marvel’s The Avengers” poised to take spot in U.S. Top 20 All-Time Highest Grossing Films by Sunday

Captain America (Chris Evans) prepares for battle in “Marvel’s The Avengers.”

Just a day ago I wrote about “Mavel’s the Avengers” nearing the top 75 highest grossing US films of all time as it sat at #86.  Clearly business has not lagged during the week as it’s reached #59 now with $257 million.

In doing so, it most recently topped:

#74 – Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides – $241 million

#73 – My Big Fat Greek Wedding – $241.4 million

#72 – Twister – $241.6 million

#71 – Raiders of the Lost Ark – $242.3 million

#70- Bruce Almighty – $242.5 million

69. Cars – $244.05 million

68.  Toy Story 2 – $245 million

69.  Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban – $249 million

68.  Men in Black – $250 million

67.  Night at the Museum – $250.8 million

66. Batman – $251.1 million [the first really major summer comic book blockbuster.]

65.  Despicable Me – $251.5 million

64.  The Hangover, Part 2 – $254.4 million

63.  Monsters, Inc. – $255.8 million

62.  The Blind Side – $255.9 million

61. I am Legend – $256 million [first trend here is that an action Will Smith movie is good for at least $250 million]

60. Star Trek (2009) – $257 million

This is all before Friday’s haul. At this point I’d safely estimate it to reach the top 20 all time by the end of this weekend as it has little real competition, headlined by Johnny Depp’s “Dark Shadows,” a film about a vampire — not exactly the kind of movie that mothers nationwide will be clamoring to see for Mother’s Day.

“The Avengers” buzz however has been so good however, that it could be the comic book movie that mothers may want to see just to figure out what all the fuss is about.

Here’s a look at the films “Avengers” will  surpass in the next three days:

58. Jaws – $260 million

57. How the Grinch Stole Christmas – $260.03 million

56.  The Incredibles – $261. 4 million

55. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets – $261.9 million

54. Shrek – $267.6 million [this marks the sixth animated film at this level, which indicates the $250 million is the average for a good, but not great animated effort so they're a good investment for Disney, Pixar, etc.]

53. The Hangover – $277 million

52. Meet the Fockers – $279 million

51. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, part 1 – $281.2 million [wonder if they'll be any more of this franchise further up the list...]

50. The Matrix Reloaded – $281.4 million

49. Home Alone – $285 million

48. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire – $288 million

47. Star Wars Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back – $290 million [my all-time favorite movie]

46. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe – $291 million

45. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix – $292 million

44. Inception – $292.5 million

43. Up – $292.9 million

42. The Sixth Sense – $293 million

41. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – $294 million [think Warner Bros. misses this franchise at all?]

40. New Moon – $296 million

39. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse – $300 million

38. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – $301.9 million

37. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl – $305 million

36. Independence Day – $306 million

35. Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi – $309.1 million

34. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End – $309.4 million

33. Star Wars: Episode II- Attack of the Clones – $310 million

“Marvel’s The Avengers” = Hulk-sized box office bucks

Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Captain America (Chris Evans) look on as alien forces continue to attack in “Marvel’s The Avengers.”

According to a few reports, “Marvel’s The Avengers” had the second biggest Friday opening of all time with $80.5 million (second only to the final installment of the Harry Potter franchise, which earned $91.5 million).

Add on the overwhelmingly positive word-of-mouth and “Avengers,” based on the popular Marvel Comics characters, seems like it has a decent chance to surpass “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2′s” all-time top grossing $169.2 million weekend opening.

I’m posting this, not just because I’m a huge fan of the movie, but because I like to see quality work do well at the box office. Marvel Studios took a huge gamble banking that audiences would flock to theaters to see B-list heroes (at least to the general public) Captain America, Iron Man and Thor in standalone movies building to an Avengers movie, but it’s clearly paid off big time. Kudos to everyone involved in this one.

Marvel Studios smartly locked up all their talent for multiple films clearly banking that this brand would be a hit and director Joss Whedon has already discussed some ideas for the sequel. Hopefully, Marvel Studios is backing the dump trucks full of money in his front yard as I’m typing.

The biggest question I have with this news is what time is the Warner Bros. Pictures meeting on Monday to discuss how they can make DC Comics’ “Justice League” into this kind of massive movie franchise…

Jennifer Lawrence stars as ‘Katniss Everdeen’ in THE HUNGER GAMES.

“The Hunger Games” is the latest ambitious beloved book series turned feature film hoping to follow in the footsteps of “Harry Potter” and “Twilight” to become an acclaimed movie franchise. Fortunately, it exceeds those lofty expectations to become the first genuine can’t miss film of the year that you’ll want to go back to the theater to see over and over again. More
