Fresh off of battling Hurricane Sandy, Steve from Third Eye Comics gives us the low-down on all this week’s new releases.

A PLUS X #1 DELIVERS THE NEXT “MARVEL NOW” TITLE!

We are so totally amped about A PLUS X, and are even more stoked that it’s dropping this Wednesday.  Marvel has managed to make the MARVEL TEAM UP concept cool, and interesting again!

This first issue features a very cool Wolverine / Hulk tale from JEPH LOEB (BATMAN: HUSH, BATMAN: THE LONG HALLOWEEN) and DALE KEOWN (HULK: THE END!), which brings us a pairing of two Marvel icons: the DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Wolverine and the MAESTRO Hulk from FUTURE IMPERFECT.

Also, we’re given a majorly badass CAPTAIN AMERICA vs. CABLE story by Dan Slott (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN), and one of our all-time favorite Captain America artists, RON GARNEY (he did the killer Mark Waid run back in the day). We cannot recommend it enough. More

Thor, Iron Man and Captain America have a stand-off.

Following the best piece of news I’ve heard all week with Joss Whedon returning to direct “Avengers 2,” I figured I’d update the latest on Marvel’s other movie projects since I last did a big Marvel roundup pre-San Diego Comic Con and a number of cool tidbits have been released since then. More

Last weekend was The Ani-Com & Games Hong Kong show. Being a Hong Kong based company, it only made sense for Hot Toys to be one of the major vendors on hand showcasing their newest collectible figures.

Since I’m not the jet-setter to go off to Hong Kong just yet, I’ve been eagerly awaiting Hot Toys putting up their pics from the show, which they did and now I’m able to share with all of you. More

“Marvel’s The Avengers” looks to continue dominance in 2013, 2014

You’d think after scoring the highest-grossing opening weekend with “Marvel’s The Avengers,” that Marvel Studios execs would be content to bask in the critical acclaim, overwhelmingly positive audience reaction of their mega-summer franchise.

After all, these licenses to print money don’t come around too often, but showing the same careful planning that led to “The Avengers,” Marvel Studios is already hard at work on the next installments of “The Avengers” franchise leading to the inevitable Avengers sequel. Here’s what you can expect to see in the not too distant future…

Iron Man 3 (May 3, 2013)

Iron Man flying

Iron Man takes to the skies in “Marvel’s The Avengers.”

Robert Downey Jr. reprises Tony Stark/Iron Man in his third solo outing and reunites with series mainstay Gwenyth Paltrow and Don Cheadle. This time out Guy Pearce joins the cast as Aldrich Killian, a fairly recently created character in the Iron Man mythos and likely villain. Ben Kingsley has been cast, but there’s no confirmation on his role. Iron Man’s main adversary, The Mandarin (think Iron Man’s Lex Luthor or the Joker) has yet to be introduced in the movie universe so that’s been the popular rumor for Kingsley’s role.

Fortunately there’s no crazy talk of this being Downey’s last time as Stark so we don’t need to panic that this will be a lame farewell episode a la “Spider-Man 3.” With “Iron Man” and “Iron Man 2″ director Jon Favreau moving on to other projects, Shane Black, who directed Downey in 2005′s “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” steps in to lend his take on the Armored Avenger.

Fun Fact: With “The Avengers,” Downey has now played Stark in four movies. Only Christopher Reeve (I almost feel if I have to say as “Superman” you may need to stop reading) and Hugh Jackman (Wolverine in the “X-Men” franchise) have played the same comic book character in as many films. Jackman currently holds the lead with five. **Helpful reader Jon reminded me that Samuel L. Jackson actually holds the lead in this trivia answer as he’s been in five of the six “Avenger” films. Thanks Jon! And Todd reminded me that Jackman’s been in the first two “X-Men” movies, “X-Men: First Class” … and “X-Men: The Last Stand” and “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” so I’m not sure if I should be thinking him or not. Ha-ha.**

Thor 2 (Nov. 15, 2013)

Thor (Chris Hemsworth)

Not much is known about the second installment of the god of thunder. All of the principal cast and supporting cast from the 2011 hit including main star Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), Anthony Hopkins (Odin) and Stellan Skarsgard (Erik Selvig) are signed on for the sequel, which is rumored to also feature Loki’s villainous allies the Enchantress and Executioner.

Captain America 2 (April 4, 2014)

Captain America

Captain America (Chris Evans) prepares to suit up for the next battle.

This is the most intriguing of the next round of sequels as the first installment – Captain America: The First Avenger – takes place during World War II. Now in modern times, the script for the sequel has Cap (Chris Evans) continuing his partnership with Nick Fury and SHIELD while trying to make sense of a world still very unfamiliar to him.

Hulk 3 (???)

The green goliath got a much-needed infusion of adoration with his fan-favorite role in “The Avengers.” Mark Ruffalo, who played Bruce Banner in the latest installment, has signed on for six more films and it’s safe to assume one of those should include another Hulk solo project, but the details are sparse as of now.

Ant-Man (2015)

Longtime Avengers comic fans might have been wondering where fellow founding members Ant-Man and Wasp were as Thor, Iron Man and Hulk formed the team with late arrivals Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow for the movie. Marvel Studios wanted to debut the insect-sized heroes in their own film before putting them on the Avengers.

Hank Pym is a biochemist who creates a size-altering formula, which he uses on himself and finds he can control ants with surprising results. At last word, Edgar Wright was set to direct the film, which doesn’t have a leading man cast in the role yet.

Avengers 2 (2015)

Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Captain America (Chris Evans) and Black Widow (Scarlet Johansson) in “Marvel’s The Avengers.”

This was clearly in the works as Marvel Studios signed up the main cast for multiple Avengers films, whether in their own solo projects, cameos in other films or main Avengers branch films.  Director Joss Whedon is locked in for the sequel so all is right with the Avengers movie world. This is a lock and it’s just a matter of time as to how soon it comes to theaters. Answer = not soon enough.

Avengers Movie Series action figures

Ok. You’ve seen “Marvel’s The Avengers.” Maybe even twice or three times like me. You’ve picked up a couple comics, but now the kids want to bring a bit more of that awesome Avengers goodness home or you want something new to add to your desk at work, so now I’ll see if the Avengers movie series from Hasbro are the mightiest summer action figures or belong in the bottom dollar discount bin.

“Packing it in”

Decked out in a nice eye-catching blue with a big Avengers logo and images of Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and Captain America (Hawkeye and Black Widow get no love at all) there’s no confusing this for some random bootleg tie-in.

“You have chosen … wisely”

Since making eight figures would be boring, Hasbro keeps things interesting with several variants of the main characters. The package lets you know which specific version of the character you’re getting.

Hasbro put numbers on the left side of the package so you know which figure you’re getting. I picked up figures 8 (Gamma Smash Hulk), 9 (Shock Strike Thor), 10 (Shield Launcher Captain America), 11 (Iron Man Fusion Armor Mark VII) and 12 (Cosmic Spear Loki) so there’s some earlier to grab from their earlier looks in the film like a Mark VI Iron Man [the one with the triangle center] or Thor with his arms showing instead of full Asgardian armor. Figures 8-12 are how the characters appeared in the final battle if you’re curious.

“Don’t I know you from somewhere?”

Thor easily wins the lookalike contest as his figure most closely resembles Chris Hemsworth, the actor playing Thor. I didn’t see much of Chris Evans or Tom Hiddleston in Captain America or Loki.

In a nice touch to the actual size differences of the actors, Captain America and Iron Man are about the same height while Loki is  slightly taller yet shorter than Thor who has to look up to Hulk.

“I like to move it, move it”

All the figures have a great range of movement, but none can turn at the waist – an odd area to leave out. Still you can pose them in a number of poses with what you have here. Only Hulk has an “action feature” as his Gamma Smash clicks his arms up to smash them down. It’s fairly harmless though and doesn’t mess up the rest of his posing.

“It’s all about how you accessorize”

Hulk gives you absolutely nothing but more plastic and heft than the others. He’s taller and bulkier so that counts for something.

Shock Strike Thor gets two two versions of his hammer. One is the standard removable one while another is encased in see-thru blue “glop” (as my Dad called it during the photo shoot) in an attempt to simulate Thor calling down lighting. He has a separate launcher piece that the lightning hammer goes into and shoots out so Thor looks like he has a cannon shooting his hammer. And it weighs his arm down so that kinda defeats the whole purpose of a shock strike, doesn’t it?

Iron Man gets a spinning pinwheel of “fusion power.” Of the added accessories, his is actually fun and clips to his arm without weighing him down.

Captain America’s shield launcher has a nice range and shoots out pretty far. This is the “you’ll shoot your eye out” accessory as it packs a nice punch.  He also comes with a more standard shield and pistol.

Loki comes with his main weapon from the film – his spear – and a two-sided axe that doesn’t snap out nearly as much as the packaging implies.

“Will they hold up?”

Iron Man

These figures are on a 3 3/4 scale. For parents in their 30s, that’s about the same size as GI Joes or Star Wars figures. The plastic is a bit softer so parts easily breaking off shouldn’t be an issue. Save Cap’s handgun, most of the accessories are big enough you won’t have to worry about losing them quickly or breaking them.

“Love don’t cost a thing”

Captain America

Toys R Us is charging $9.99 for these, but currently are running a special with a free figure with a purchase over $30 on Avengers figure. That wouldn’t be hard to do at all. You may find them for a few cents cheaper elsewhere, but factor in gas and it may be a wash.

“That’s a wrap folks”

Hulk

Hasbro isn’t giving these figures away, but they’re very solid movie tie-in figures for fans of the film. Thor is probably the best of the bunch, but Hulk is a fun figure you won’t want to put down. If you can only grab two or three, I’d recommend Hulk, Thor and Loki. There’s a maskless Captain America for those who prefer that look for him and Iron Man is bound to have 20 different figures.
