Rise of the Guardians – This was a film that deserved a lot more love last year and hopefully it finds a well-deserved audience on the home video market. Hugh Jackman, Alec Baldwin, Chris Pine, Isla Fisher and Jude Law lend their voices to holiday/weather icons like Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and Jack Frost on an adventure to stop the world from plunging into darkness conceived by Pitch Black. 2013 FF: Figure this was an appropriate day to post this one, no? I love these ensemble comedies and all their consistently moving parts. This one is more worthy of a “guilty pleasure” tag, but I enjoy it every time I watch it. Here’s my look back: More

Leatherface (Dan Yeager) finds his weapon in “Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D.”
1. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D – $23 million [debut week] The seventh installment of the horror franchise cut through the three strong holdovers from the previous two weeks to take the top spot. I almost feel like this is a case of three top films duking it out and splitting the audience just enough for a new film to sneak in and win the weekend. The 2003 edition starring Jessica Biel brought in $28 million its opening weekend and didn’t have the benefit of 3D to help boost the numbers. Maybe more concerning for Lionsgate is that this will be a very short stay atop the box office as horror films generally don’t hold well the second weekend and “Gangster Squad” and Oscar favorite “Zero Dark Thirty” come out Friday meaning “Massacre” could likely miss the Top 5 next week altogether. Quaid (Colin Farrell) gets caught.
Total Recall – This needless remake of the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger film thankfully bombed at the box office further damaging Colin Farrell’s credibility as a box office draw. It wasn’t his fault though. Hollywood execs continue to ignore the fact that sometimes people don’t want their “cult classics” messed with for remakes no matter how much technology has advanced since the original. More

Gerard Butler stars in “Playing for Keeps.”
I continue wondering what’s become of Gerard Butler’s career. He seemed ready to become the next great action star after his awesome 2006 breakout performance as King Leonidas in “300.” He was perfectly cast and came across as that larger than life superhero that some actors have and others don’t. And I’m baffled as to how some director hasn’t convinced him to sign on to their comic book movie. The guy can play the hero or the villain. Through a large fault of his own and curious film choices, Butler’s struggled to follow his once impressive post-”300″ buzz with anything to move him to the upper echelon of rising stars. He could have been the next Jason Statham, but instead, he’s become the next Hugh Grant. More

“Stealth” is an appropriate title for this summer movie as it sneaks up on you and turns into a good movie without you noticing. More

Colin Farrel, Comic-Con, Jessica Biel, Kate Beckinsale, Total Recall
“Total Recall” has one of the best movie premises. You get hooked up to a machine and pretend to be the best version of you that you could possibly imagine. Of all the relaunches and re-imagining of older films, this one seems to be as relevant as ever. And it’s got Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel so if absolutely nothing else it’ll be good to look at.
