For your listening pleasure.
Here’s all the Oscar nominees for “Best Original Song.” They’re all exceptional — “Before My Time” by J. Ralph featuring Scarlett Johansson is a nice surprise — but my favorite remains Adele’s “Skyfall.” Give them a listen and let me know your choice about who should win. More

Ted – I definitely didn’t like this as much as some folks, but Seth McFarlane’s first-live action film proved to be a MAJOR hit and dethroned “The Hangover” as the highest-grossing comedy film of all time. It has its moments, but MacFarlane settles all too often for the cheap and easy joke with the rare, inspired jokes appearing far too infrequently for me. Mila Kunis and Mark Wahlberg are good enough though that I’ll forgive them for appearing in the laughable “Max Payne” movie. More

CHRISTIAN BALE as Batman in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ action thriller “THE DARK KNIGHT RISES.”
1. The Dark Knight Rises – $64 million [$243 million; 2nd week] The third installment of
Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy once again easily captured the number one spot at the box office. For the first 8 days of its release, “TDKR’s” $243 million gross trails the 2008 “The Dark Knight” take of $261 million and “Marvel’s The Avengers’” $299 million. There’s more than a few asterisks to this though. The Summer Olympics’ opening ceremony attracted a record 40.7 rating in the U.S. so a number of potential audience members stayed home to watch the worldwide event. More

1. Ice Age: Continental Drift – $45.7 million [debut week] Audiences didn’t give the warmest welcome to the fourth installment of the “Ice Age” franchise, but it was enough for first place for this week, the last likely time a film in July and much of August not named “The Dark Knight Rises” will be able to make that claim once Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster debuts Friday. Andrew Garfield stars as Spider-Man in Columbia Pictures’ “The Amazing Spider-man.”
1. The Amazing Spider-Man. – $65 million. [6-days; $140 million] It’s not at the blockbuster status of the original “Spider-Man” films, but its opening week haul – since it opened Tuesday- has been solid and shows Sony Pictures knew what it was doing when it decided to re-launch its blockbuster franchise.

Magic Mike, Ted, The Amazing Spider-Man
Having the record Tuesday opening sounds a lot like a CBS statistic of “the best new comedy at 8 p.m. on Mondays,” but “The Amazing Spider-Man” webbed up $35 million to set a new Tuesday record beating out the $27.9 million haul of the original “Transformers.”

It’s safe to assume the film will prove to be an attractive option for audiences looking to escape the holiday heat as the Eastern region was enduring near 100-degree temperatures. An air-conditioned way to beat the heat and keep the kids occupied until the fireworks should prove to be a sound strategy for many parents. Box office analysts suspect the film will earn about $150 million this weekend. Not bad for a re-launch.

John (MARK WAHLBERG) hangs out with his best friend, Ted (voiced by SETH MACFARLANE).
1. Ted – $54.1 million [debut week] – Seth MacFarlane’s first feature film proved to be a big hit with audiences and is the highest grossing Friday take for any R-rated comedy. “The Hangover” reached $16 million to “Ted’s” $20.2 million.
Universal Studios’ decision to fill the release void left after Paramount Pictures opted to push “G.I. Joe: Retaliation’s” opening to 2013 looks like a brilliant move. “Ted” was originally set to open July 13, which would likely have gotten it lost in the shuffle between blockbusters “The Amazing Spider-Man” (which opens July 3) and “The Dark Knight Rises” (opening July 20). There was also no other comedy fighting for audience attention so this was a smart bit of strategy on Universal’s part.

You’re gonna love “Ted” if Seth MacFarlane’s particular brand of potty-humor still has you doubled over in laughing fits every Sunday. Even if you’re over the “Family Guy” format, there are a few moments that achieve comedy greatness if you’re willing to endure a lot of fifth-grade level material. More
