A look at the best and worst of 2012 films

I’ll get around to a Top 10 Best list in the next few days, but I got inspired on this and finished it first. So you get this now. Here’s a look at the highs and lows that were this 2012 movie season.

Best 12 months for a rising star – Chris Hemsworth. From “The Cabin in the Woods” to “Marvel’s The Avengers” to “Snow White and the Huntsman,” Hemsworth had a year that would be a career for some actors. Even when he’s involved in a turd like “Red Dawn,” he shrugs it off and gets to work on sequels for “Thor,” “The Avengers 2” and “Snow White and the Huntsman.” We should all have such stable career outlooks. One of the reasons I like horror movies is because they’re simple. They feature some evil force whether some near indestructible boogeyman finding creative ways to kill teens or some creepy curse possessing people and slowly wiping them out. It’s a good and safe formula and one that’s worked pretty well for a long time.

To paraphrase Ke$ha (and how many times do you think those words have been uttered?) horror movies are what they are. Occasionally there’s room for a horror movie with a twist ending you don’t see coming like a “Friday the 13th” or “Scream,” but since horror fans are the least demanding fans, it’s not necessary.

Director/Writer Drew Goddard (“Lost”) and co-writer Joss Whedon (“Serenity”) unite to put a new spin on the genre with “The Cabin in the Woods,” a hodgepodge of every horror cliché with a bit of reality TV thrown just for fun.   More

The Cabin in the Woods – No actor’s other actor had a better three years than Chris Hemsworth. He had a brief, but memorable role in the “Star Trek,” then hit the jackpot by being cast as the lead in 2011′s “Thor,” which led to a one of the main roles in “Marvel’s The Avengers,” the year’s biggest blockbuster and the third highest grossing film of all time and his stock continues to rise with starring roles in “Snow White and the Huntsman” and the forthcoming “Red Dawn” remake. It also helps get movies that were on the shelf released in theaters. In this Joss Whedon/Drew Goddard horror/thriller, five friends travel to a cabin that has more secrets than they imagined. I haven’t seen this yet, but I’ve yet to see anything Whedon’s been involved in that I haven’t enjoyed tremendously and I doubt he’ll start here either. More
