A look at the best and worst of 2012 films

I’ll get around to a Top 10 Best list in the next few days, but I got inspired on this and finished it first. So you get this now. Here’s a look at the highs and lows that were this 2012 movie season.

Thor (Chris Hemsworth) in “Marvel’s The Avengers.”

Best 12 months for a rising star – Chris Hemsworth. From “The Cabin in the Woods” to “Marvel’s The Avengers” to “Snow White and the Huntsman,” Hemsworth had a year that would be a career for some actors. Even when he’s involved in a turd like “Red Dawn,” he shrugs it off and gets to work on sequels for “Thor,” “The Avengers 2” and “Snow White and the Huntsman.” We should all have such stable career outlooks. These cats are psycho!

A cat’s take on Billy (Sam Rockwell) – note the stuffed animal stand-in.

I’m pretty sure “Seven Psychopaths” is going to be a guilty pleasure for me this fall starring Colin Farrell (“Total Recall“), Sam Rockwell (“Iron Man 2″), Woody Harrelson (“The Hunger Games“) about a writer whose friends steal a gangster’s dog.

Does this cat have better hair than Christopher Walken? Too close to call.

Just to raise the craziness scale a bit more of the film, a new trailer, “Seven PsychoCATS” has just been released featuring cats directed by Adult Swim alumni Jim Tozzi. Yes, it’s completely brilliant, but how could you go wrong with a cat channeling Christopher Walken?

“Seven Psychopaths” opens this Friday.

Box office roundup Aug. 5, “The Dark Knight Rises” above box office for 3rd straight week

CHRISTIAN BALE as Bruce Wayne.

1. “The Dark Knight Rises” – $36.4 million [$356.6 million; 3rd week]For a third straight week, Batman beats out all comers. Expect a much tougher challenge come next weekend with the arrival of “The Bourne Legacy.” The final Batman film for Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale is actually losing less of its audience from “The Dark Knight,” but is bringing in a lot less. See more on that here. The very entertaining Summer Olympics is likely contributing to some of this box office though. More

“Total Recall” (take 2) is the ideal science-fiction film for anyone who hasn’t seen the 1990 original or cares about particularly compelling movies. More

Kate Beckinsale stars in “Total Recall.”

** “Total Recall” countdown week continues with a look at another of the film’s leading ladies – Kate Beckinsale in “Van Helsing,” a film that seemed to convince her the best way to fight vampires and werewolves was in her own franchise.

If “Van Helsing” is any indication of how bad the rest of the summer crop will be, don’t wake me until fall–or better yet, winter. Yes, I’m well aware that it’s only May, but don’t tell me–tell the Hollywood suits who figure they can sucker more people into theaters if they put trash like “Van Helsing” in a nice pretty package labeled “summer movie.” More

“Stealth” is an appropriate title for this summer movie as it sneaks up on you and turns into a good movie without you noticing. More

Recall a completely different life in “Total Recall” sweepstakes

“Total Recall” has one of the best movie premises. You get hooked up to a machine and pretend to be the best version of you that you could possibly imagine. Of all the relaunches and re-imagining of older films, this one seems to be as relevant as ever. And it’s got Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel so if absolutely nothing else it’ll be good to look at.
