Buying off the comic book rack – March 6, 2013 – Enter "The Age of Ultron"

Third Eye Comics‘ Steve Anderson has some exciting new releases to discuss as well as the next big Marvel storyline to followup on the highly-successful Avengers vs. X-Men epic:

Marvel NOW unites for THE AGE OF ULTRON #1

Folks, we are so amped for the AGE OF ULTRON, it’s ridiculous.

Everything we’ve read and seen on this huge MARVEL event is making it look to be one of the biggest stories the publisher has done in quite some time.

For years the heroes of the Marvel Universe have lived in fear that Ultron would one day evolve to fulfill its desire to wipe out all organic life and take over Earth — now, that day has arrived.

Imagine if SKYNET existed in the Marvel Universe, that’s the AGE OF ULTRON. A ruthless, calculating, and downright sinister artificial life form whose only mission is to destroy organic life completely, and replace it with artificial intelligence.Wanna get into it?

This is a fantastic, user-friendly series to jump on board with, as you do not need a ton of prior continuity knowledge to jump on board fresh. If the MARVEL NOW #1s do a fantastic job of making it easy to hop aboard a series, then AGE OF ULTRON is the perfect event to be able to get right into.

I gotta tell you: I’ve always been a big GREEN ARROW fan, but for the last few years, there hasn’t been a really outstanding GREEN ARROW run..  UNTIL NOW.

Only two issues in, and we can tell that JEFF LEMIRE  and ANDREA SORRENTINO’S  run is going to rank up there with classics like Mike Grell and Kevin Smith.

Bringing a very noir, very street-level approach to the character and his world, this new run feels very close in tone to stuff like BATMAN YEAR ONE.

In Lemire & Sorrentino’s GREEN ARROW run, Oliver Queen has lost everything: his company, his money, his friends, and most of his arrows. It’s all because of one man: Komodo, who has come to tear Ollie’s life to shreds.

From the ashes, Ollie must uncover the secrets of his father’s past — secrets of the island and Ollie’s own uncanny ability with the bow.

You gotta trust me, this is one of the best DC books going right now due to the creative team that’s just come on board. Try it out. We promise: you’ll love it.

SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #5 — The best take on SPIDEY in ages continues!

SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN continues to exceed all of our expectations, and then some, as it delivers one of the most satisfying, and kick-ass MARVEL NOW titles on the stands. We seriously have not dug Spider-Man this much in quite some time.

In this week’s SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #5, we see how many have to die before the Superior Spider-Man will find himself able to kill a super-villain, breaking the will of the Peter Parker element that still resides within his brain.

It’s SPIDER-MAN VERSUS MASSACRE — with hundreds of lives in the balance.

Sharp storytelling, great artwork, SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN is the definition of what a great MARVEL COMICS is.

The dynamic of Doc Ock trying to legitimately be a hero, but finding himself doing it in his own skewed way, is incredible.

IMAGE COMICS delivers another hit series with “Lost Vegas”!

It’s always around Spring when IMAGE delivers some of their most exciting projects, and this Wednesday’s LOST VEGAS is shaping up to be another breakout IMAGE hit.

Jim McCann and Janet Lee, the creators of cult favorite graphic novel RETURN OF THE DAPPER MEN, reunite to create a universe filled with intrigue as one gambler-turned-slave has 24 hours to go all in and pull off the greatest heist the universe has seen.

Welcome to LOST VEGAS! Aboard this luxurious casino-filled traveling space-station you will find the highest stakes games from every corner of every planet, unheard-of winnings, and the greatest attractions anywhere… but those who bet it all and lose must work it off as indentured servants to the Casino.

Escape is not possible. No one is exempt from these rules.

LOST VEGAS looks to be the kind of kick-ass sci-fi that’s been putting IMAGE on the map lately, one part FIREFLY / SERENITY, one part HITCH-HIKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY, with a little bit of JAMES BOND thrown in, this is a unique, and innovative read that’ll leave you wanting more.

McCann brings the same solid storytelling he demonstrated on MIND THE GAP, while Janet Lee’s artwork brings the world of LOST VEGAS to life in a big way.

ALL NEW X-MEN continues to be one of the best damn superhero comics on the stands, as this week’s issue #8 takes the team into some very interesting territory… AVENGERS territory.

Now, we’ll get to see how the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes react to the fact that the X-Men of yesteryear, many of whom have grown up to be pretty fear-inspiring enemies of the AVENGERS, are here in the present day.

Folks: if you’re still not reading ALL NEW X-MEN, you are seriously missing out on what’s one of the best comics on the racks these days.

The series has the same kind of excitement, and just plain innovative awesomeness that UNCANNY X-FORCE did back when it first began with the DARK ANGEL SAGA.

Highly recommended, get into ALL NEW X-MEN this week.
