Shailene Woodley out as MJ in Amazing Spider-Man 2
Woodley unlikely to play Mary Jane in new series
The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s web is getting tangled. I wasn’t blown away with the first look of Shailene Woodley as Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and maybe I wasn’t the only one.
Fresh off the news that the franchise will continue through 2018, it’s been announced that Mary Jane won’t be showing up in the sequel after all.
Woodley reportedly only worked on the set for three days so there won’t be a lot to cut from the film, but this is a pretty surprising move.
‘I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship,’ said Director Marc Webb to The Hollywood Reporter.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Woodley shared her take on the switch:
‘Of course I’m bummed. But I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason,’ she said. ‘Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film.’
Just don’t expect Woodley to return as THR says it’s doubtful she’ll come back for the third film and will likely be recast.
So there’s some time now so start your dream casting list. Who should take over the role for The Amazing Spider-Man 3?
Yeah, that move was a surprise indeed. Sounds like Sony just changed their minds on featuring ‘Mary Jane’ in this film which to be honest is alright with me, let ‘Gwen Stacy’ get a little more time to shine on her own. Plus I think all the rumblings about ‘MJ’s’ looks in this film influenced Sony to replace the actress for “TASM3”.
