Buying off the comic book rack – July 10, 2013

Steve from Third Eye Comics shares his thoughts on this week’s new releases.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #22 — THE TRINITY WAR BEGINS

We’re so pumped for TRINITY WAR, it’s ridiculous.  There’s a ton of speculation surrounding TRINITY WAR and it’s impact on the DC NEW 52… and pre-NEW 52. We’re not sure what to expect, but what we do know is that TRINITY WAR will end right as Villains Month begins… and trust us: you’re going to want to get in on Villains Month; it’s going to be the biggest thing DC has done since the onset of the NEW 52.

So, what IS Trinity War anyway? In JUSTICE LEAGUE #22, the death of a hero ignites a violent war among the Justice Leagues…. it’s League Vs. League vs. League as an impending darkness approaches the DC Universe.

What side will iconic heroes like Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman take as they find themselves at war with their long-time friends and allies?

We haven’t been this excited about a DC Universe storyline since… heck, since maybe BLACKEST NIGHT? That’s how big TRINITY WAR is going to be.

Featuring GEOFF JOHNS and Ivan Reis at the helm…. this is going to be one hell of an awesome event.

WOLVERINE #6 —  Logan Loses his Healing Factor!

Hey true believers… if you haven’t been reading WOLVERINE, you better start with this Wednesday’s #6, ’cause it’s gonna go down in history as one of the more iconic moments in the character’s legacy.

And, why you might ask? Well, there’s been rumblings of Wolverine being the next comic book icon to bite the dust… and we think this is where that whole turn of events begins.

‘Cause ol’ Logan is losing the thing that makes him so darn unique: his healing factor.

I won’t say anymore, but trust us: the biggest WOLVERINE story.. EVER.. begins here!

Image Comics debuts  SHELTERED #1

When we first saw pages from SHELTERED, we got flashbacks of our first time peeking through WALKING DEAD, CHEW, and REVIVAL. Stunning concept. Great artistic delivery. Smart dialogue. Instantly likable characters…. the book really did have it all, and then some.

We could not be more pumped about this new ongoing series.

What’s it all about? In SHELTERED, the founders of the survivalist colony Safe Haven are sure that the end of civilization is at hand. Economic collapse, natural disaster, civil war — they’re prepared for it all in their underground compound deep in the woods of America’s northeast.

But, the real kicker? The threat to their existence comes from a source they never expected: their own children.

We don’t want to get too spoilery here… so we’ll just say this: SHELTERED delivers something truly unique — a pre-apocalypse tale, rather than a post-apocalypse one.. and it’s darn cool.

The BIGGEST Superman title in years continues !

Take two of comics biggest talents, Scott Snyder and Jim Lee, put them together on one of comics’ longest running icons.. and yeah, that’s a recipe for pure magic, folks.

We absolutely fell in love with issue #1 of SUPERMAN UNCHAINED, as it delivered the kind of SUPERMAN story we’d been waiting for.

I’m not going to lie, sometimes it takes a lot to make Superman cool, and hot damn, Snyder & Lee really brought it with this book.

I’m pretty happy to say that issue #2 is just as good as the debut, getting straight into the action, after the set up of issue #1.

In issue #2, the technological terrorists called Ascension are growing bolder with every attack, creating problems only Superman can solve… and that’s with the help of the world’s greatest detective, Batman.

But the mystery that’s really got them both worried is the unknown figure that’s been shadowing Superman.

CHECK OUT BATMAN #22 for CHAPTER 2 of ZERO YEAR!

We’ve been ranting and raving for nearly two years straight now about how freakin’ great Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s work on BATMAN has been… and, you know what? We’re not gonna stop anytime soon.

In this week’s BATMAN #22, the second chapter of the totally rad ZERO YEAR storyline, we’re taken further into Bruce Wayne’s past with the Red Hood Gang and his run-ins with aspiring District Attorney Harvey Dent.

Meanwhile, we’re shown a secret moment from Bruce’s training abroad that is revealed for the first time ever.

Snyder & Capullo are doing an incredible job of crafting a modern origin of Batman for the 21st century.

Oh, and their take on the Riddler?

Worth the price of admission alone. Incredible.

SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #13 — Superior Spidey teams up with.. THE LIZARD!

Superior Spider-Man continues to be one of our favorite Marvel titles with each and every issue, and this week’s issue #13 turns things up a notch as the NO ESCAPE storyline gets even wilder.

In chapter 3 of NO ESCAPE, Superior Spider-Man must team up with the LIZARD, as he finds himself tasked with a pretty tough chore: to kill the Spider-Slayer, at Mayor Jameson’s command.

More Spider-Awesome from the best damn Spidey series we’ve read in ages this Wednesday in SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #13.

QUANTUM & WOODY #1 DEBUTS FROM VALIANT THIS WEDNESDAY, AND IT IS AWESOME!!

Valiant has been really doing a great job with all their titles, and we’ve loved how they’ve been building a superhero universe from the ground-up that really feels natural, organic, and well thought out.

And, this week, QUANTUM & WOODY returns with a new reader-friendly issue #1 that you can jump on board with, and find out why we’re all so super excited to see this book back in action.

Back in the late ’90s, in the post-crash world of comics, there were some real gems rising up out of nowhere, and one of those was QUANTUM and WOODY, a genuinely funny take on the super-powered dynamic duo idea.

What’s the scoop? Once upon a time, Eric and Woody Henderson were inseparable. Adopted brothers. Best friends. Brilliant minds. Years later, they are estranged siblings, petty rivals, and washed-up failures.

But when their father’s murder leads them into the throes of a life-altering scientific accident, Eric and Woody will find themselves with a whole new purpose — and a perfectly legitimate reason to wear costumes and fight crime.
