25 white comic book characters race swapped in movies and TV

Johnny Storm (Michael B. Jordan, Fantastic Four)

On the other side of the spectrum, there’s not many characters whose race swap have angered the more ‘traditional’ fan base as Jordan’s casting as the hot-headed car enthusiast Johnny Storm for 20th Century Fox’s Fantastic Four movie.

To some extent I get the complaints as the film version still gives him a white sister. Yes, either could be adopted into the other’s family, but it’s needlessly complicated.

I’d have cast Jordan as team leader Reed Richards giving Fox one up on rival Marvel Studios by having a minority lead a superhero team. Jordan and his co-stars have endured some tremendously insensitive comments about his casting. It didn’t help that this take on Fantastic Four was pretty crappy too, but at least Jordan would have the last laugh following his showstopping performance in Black Panther.

Interestingly, Fantastic Four director Josh Trank said recently that he originally wanted to cast a black actress to play Sue Storm, but got shut down by 20th Century Fox.
