Marvel is about to have some real major competition for the franchise I’m most excited for new installments.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is coming Dec. 18, but the franchise’s 2016 offering — “Rogue One” — looks to be just as intriguing especially with the first image of the main cast.
Gareth Edwards (“Godzilla“) will direct the standalone story of resistance fighters partnering to steal the plans to the planet-destroying Death Star.
The film stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed and the most exciting cast member to me — Donnie Yen. Can’t imagine Edwards isn’t salivating over the prospects of shooting Yen in a fight scene.
Whitaker isn’t in the shot so I’m wondering if he won’t be playing the film’s big bad guy, which would be pretty fun and an interesting departure from the normal for the series’ human villains.
“‘Rogue One’ takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe,” producer Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement.
“It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know. Gareth is such an innovative director and I’m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he’s selected for ‘Rogue One.’”
I’m very curious to see how this plays out and am glad to hear I’ll keep getting my December Star Wars fix for the next few years as this comes to theaters Dec. 16.
