The more I see of Suicide Squad the more convinced I am that Warner Bros. has found the exact perfect tone for this film. The last time I was so intrigued by an outside the box film of this nature was Guardians of the Galaxy and that turned out pretty well.
From this latest trailer, there’s little doubt Margot Robbie’s career is going to shoot into the stratosphere after the film comes out. The film also looks to feature far more of Jared Leto’s take on The Joker than I initially expected. I figured the film was going to have Joker as a bonus extended cameo type role, but based on this trailer, it certainly appears he’s going to be the main villain the Squad is going to be called to take down. And yet despite having Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Deadshot (Will Smith), The Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Katana (Karen Fukuhara), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney) and Slipknot (Adam Beach), I’m still not liking their odds.
Of course they may get slightly better depending on the nature of Ben Affleck’s Batman’s role in the film.
I was worried Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flagg was going to be taking a back seat to the more charismatic villains, but it appears the film fully respects his comic role with the team as the leader of this motley crew. I’m still strongly pulling for a sequel so we can see Bronze Tiger join the team.
At this point, I’m really not sure which DC film is going to prove more successful between this and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Suicide Squad doesn’t have the luxury of having the two biggest superheroes of all-time battling against each other on the big screen, but it looks to be far truer and more accurate to the source material of Suicide Squad.
Suicide Squad comes to theaters Aug. 5.
