This one was completely unexpected. Old school collectors have been clamoring for Mattel to get out more of the legendary figures who made the 80s one of the most memorable decades in wrestling history. The solo stars of the Hulkamania Era have largely been covered, but Mattel still has some work to do on the tag team and manager front.
But naturally no 80s WWF collection is complete with Mean Gene the man who asked the hard-hitting questions and wasn’t afraid to call Bobby Heenan, Jimmy Hart, Slick, Mr. Fuji, etc. out on their actions. And now we’re one more essential legend in our collections with the reveal of Mean Gene’s latest figure.
While Mean Gene spent most of the 90s in WCW covering the exploits of Hulk Hogan, Sting, the nWo and Ric Flair (Meeeeeeeeean By God! Geneeee! Woooooo!) this version is definitely a vintage WWF era figure, which is fine. Online distributor paulbonomo.com broke the news and it’s nice to see someone besides Ringside Collectibles break some WWE figure information.
As the latest in Wal-Mart’s exclusive Build-a-Figure set you’ll need to get Cesaro, Seth Rollins in Summerslam ’15 attire, X-Pac in his red and black DX attire and Triple H. Mattel continues to be somewhat frustrating by putting demanded attires: Rollins and X-Pac in the Basic line when a lot of collectors would prefer them in Elite format.
Clearly the prize here is Mean Gene, but I definitely would have been happy to have X-Pac and Rollins on my display as Elite figures.
