Following a controversial Royal Rumble finale, both Bret Hart and Lex Luger would be given a shot at Yokozuna’s WWF title at Wrestlemania. While Luger faltered in his attempt, Bret Hart got the opportunity to avenge his Wrestlemania 9 loss and made the most of it.
After a grueling encounter, The Hitman evaded Yokozuna’s dreaded Banzai Drop to earn his second world title joining Bruno Sammartino, Hulk Hogan, Randy ‘Macho Man’ Savage, Ric Flair and Yokozuna as multiple time WWF champions.
Humiliated after a surprising loss at the Royal Rumble, Bam Bam Bigelow was not in the mood for the antics of NFL legend Lawrence Taylor, who was sitting at ringside. Bigelow immediately confronted LT leading to a physical encounter resulting in Taylor challenging Bigelow at Wrestlemania.
While Shawn Michaels once again dazzled the crowd with his show-stealing performance against Diesel, LT acquitted himself well in defeating the future ECW world champion.
From their rivalries as one-half of The Hart Foundation and The Rockers and a feud over the Intercontinental Title, Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels seemed destined to main event Wrestlemania against each other. To fully capture the magnitude of this important encounter, WWF President Gorilla Monsoon declared the match would be a one-hour Iron Man match with the man getting the most pinfalls being declared the winner.
Both men proved too evenly matched to gain a pin during the allotted time, which should have resulted in Hart successfully defending his title. But the match was restarted to have a winner. Rattled by the unfair decision, Hart was hit by a pair of Michaels’ Sweet Chin Music setting up a new (for the moment) popular world’s champion and the beginning of a hero’s fall.
