Loving trailer reveals first look at historic couple
I was excited to get the first look at the Loving trailer today as it looks as good as I hoped.
It’s based on the true story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple who spent nine years fighting to live as a family in their hometown. In 1967, the Supreme Court confirmed their fight to marry. Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby) and Ruth Negga (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) are playing the couple.
Here’s the Loving trailer.
Here’s more detailed information from distributor Focus Features:
The couple had grown up in Central Point, a small town in Virginia that was more integrated than surrounding areas in the American South. Yet it was the state of Virginia, where they were making their home and starting a family, that first jailed and then banished them. Richard and Mildred relocated with their children to the inner city of Washington, D.C. While relatives made them feel welcome there, the more urban environment did not feel like home to them. Ultimately, the pull of their roots in Virginia would spur Mildred to try to find a way back.
Director/writer Jeff Nichols is bringing the story to the big screen. Edgerton and Nagga are a good pairing. Edgerton is supremely versatile while Negga is a star on the rise that deserves a starring role. Currently she appears on AMC’s Preacher. The supporting cast also looks promising with Marton Csokas (The Equalizer), Nick Kroll, Terri Abney, Alano Miller, Jon Bass and Michael Shannon (Man of Steel).
Loving has a limited release in select cities beginning Nov. 4 before a larger nationwide expansion later in the month.
With the country still plagued by so much idiotic racial intolerance and marriage equality still making headlines, the timing of Loving couldn’t be better. It might not change everyone’s perspective, but if it can touch a few people the movie will more than have served its purpose.
